Planning meeting a success
The 2007-2008 YLD board met in Chattanooga Aug. 3-4, for its annual planning meeting to set in motion programs and events for the coming bar year. Under the leadership of President Jason Long of Knoxville, the board made significant progress in planning for its many activities, service projects, publications, outreach programs and CLEs. TBA President Marcy Eason of Chattanooga addressed the board and thanked the YLD for all the work it does for the "Big Bar." Stayed tuned for more details on all the ways you can get involved!

New social events planned
What do UT football, Predator's games, and Silky O'Sullivan's have in common? One answer is that they are all in Tennessee, but the better answer is that they all will play host to YLD networking and social events this year. Yes, that's right. The YLD is branching out with social events in each of the state's major metro areas - no strings attached, no CLE seminars involved, just plain old fun. To kick things off (pun intended), we will host a tailgate party before the Tennessee/South Carolina football game on Oct. 27. Come be part of the fun! Time and location will be announced in next month's E-DICT. And look for other events in a city near you in the coming months. If you have questions or ideas for an event in your area, contact Membership Committee Chair Lee Bowles at lee@bussartlaw.com.

Fall law school visits planned
The YLD's Law School Outreach Committee, which seeks to foster and develop relationships between young lawyers and law students, will sponsor membership recruitment and social events at each of the state's four law schools this fall. These events provide a great opportunity for attorneys to connect with other young lawyers in town, help students better understand the practice of law in Tennessee and to get good leads for summer associates. For law students, the events provide invaluable networking opportunities and maybe more importantly, free food! For more information, or to help plan an event at your alma mater, contact committee Chair David Bates at dbates@duboislegal.com.

Young lawyers shine at ABA
The ABA Annual Meeting was held in San Francisco Aug. 10-12, and Tennessee young lawyers were well represented. Memphis lawyer and former TBA YLD President Danny Van Horn opened the ABA/YLD Assembly in one of his final acts as speaker of that body. Memphis attorney and TBA YLD Secretary Effie Bean led the assembly in the pledge of allegiance and Knoxville lawyer and current TBA YLD President Jason Long gave the invocation. Van Horn has served as speaker of the assembly, the highest legislative office in the division, for the past year. At the conclusion of the meeting, he relinquished the position but assumed a new one - that of division delegate. Also representing Tennessee at the meeting were delegates Tasha Blakney of Knoxville, David Changas of Nashville and Michelle Sellers of Jackson. During the meeting the ABA/YLD recognized "Stars of the Year." Of the fewer than 10 that were given, two went to Tennessee young lawyers. David Johnson of Nashville was recognized for his work as chair of the CLE Committee and Van Horn was honored for several resolutions he drafted for assembly meetings throughout the year.

Earn CLE, peer recognition
The YLD is soliciting contributions from members who wish to earn CLE credits by producing online CLE courses this bar year. The division has set a goal of creating five new online programs and is looking for lawyers willing to author one or more of these courses. This is a great opportunity to earn CLE credit, have your work published, impress your partner and add to your resume. We'll even provide you with a guide to writing online CLE to help you through the process. Please contact Kimberly Pride, the YLD's online CLE coordinator, at kpride@rddlawfirm.com for more details.

Paid tutoring opportunity
The TBA has been contacted about a paid short-term tutoring opportunity in the Nashville area for a young lawyer. The job is to tutor a student who will be taking the LSAT soon. If you are interested, please contact Stacey Shrader at sshrader@tnbar.org.
