CASA award winner selected
During the Tennessee Bar Association's Leadership Conference Jan. 18-20, the Young Lawyers Division will present the 2008 CASA Volunteer of the Year Award to Don Merzlak of Mosheim. This annual award recognizes a court appointed special advocate who goes the extra mile in his or her work with a CASA program in the state. Merzlak has served as a court appointed special advocate in Greene County for seven years, handling 34 cases and going well beyond the call of duty in helping children find safe and stable environments in which to live and grow. In choosing Merzlak as this year's award recipient, the YLD selection committee focused on the longevity of his service, his reputation as a CASA advocate and the lasting contributions he has made to the program in northeast Tennessee. Both Merzlak and the agency that nominated him, CASA of Northeast Tennessee, will receive a cash award. Read more about Merzlak in the January issue of the Tennessee Bar Journal.

Young lawyers give to CASA sculpture

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of East Tennessee, which serves abused and neglected children in Knox, Blount, Sevier and Hamblen counties, has commissioned a sculpture to raise awareness of the problem of child abuse. The sculpture will be placed in front of the Knox County Juvenile Court and carry a tribute to former juvenile Judge Carey E. Garrett. The organization is soliciting donations from the legal community to help fund the initiative.

Young lawyers are already doing their part. Money raised from the TBA YLD's public service project in Knoxville has been contributed to the project. To make a donation, contact CASA at (865) 329-3399 or download an informational sheet

New Lawyer Experience on tap
The New Lawyer Experience: Bridging the Gap Between Preparation and Practice is a daylong CLE designed to give new lawyers the tools they need to succeed in the practice of law. Based on the highly successful Bridge the Gap program of years past, the seminar has been redesigned and updated for a new generation of young lawyers. The course offers an introduction to a range of practice areas and practice tips, features a panel of seasoned associates willing to answer practical questions about the workplace, and includes a lunch and keynote address by a distinguished local attorney. In the afternoon, participants will select a litigation or transactional breakout session to dig deeper on issues in their areas of practice. The CLE will conclude with a networking mixer so new lawyers can meet and mingle with colleagues and more experienced members of the bar. If you are new to the practice of law in Tennessee, you need to be here! Call (800) 899-6993 or go online to register.
