Last call for Lookouts game
The 2007-2008 YLD Board will meet in Chattanooga Aug. 3-5 for its annual summer planning meeting. During the meeting, the board will set in place plans for CLEs, membership events and public service projects for the upcoming year. If you are in Chattanooga on the evening of Saturday, Aug. 4, please join the YLD leadership for a picnic dinner and Lookouts baseball game. Dinner starts at 6:15 p.m. followed by the game at 7:15 p.m. Cost is $16 per person. Please RSVP to Stacey Shrader at (615) 383-7421 or sshrader@tnbar.org by Wednesday, Aug.1.
Publications chair appointed
The YLD welcomes Benjamin T. Reese of Chattanooga as its new Publications Committee chair. Reese received a bachelor's of business administration from the University of Tennessee (cum laude, 1999) before obtaining his law degree from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in 2004. Following graduation from law school, Reese served a judicial clerkship with Magistrate Judge Diane K. Vescovo in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. He is now an associate at Leitner, Williams, Dooley & Napolitan PLLC where he focuses on defense litigation. As chair of the Publications Committee, Reese will oversee the division's special publications including the Tennessee Ethics Handbook, Basic Legal Resources: A Guide for Nonprofit Agencies in Service to the Public and Local Bar Rules.
District 14 rep named
Memphis attorney Emily Turner Landry has been appointed to fill the unexpired term of the District 14 Representative. The vacancy occurred in June when former representative Brian Faughnan resigned the position after serving one year of a two-year term. Landry received a bachelor's in psychology and political science from Texas A&M University in 1999 and her law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 2002. She currently is an associate at Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz PC in Memphis where she maintains a litigation practice. Landry returns to the board after serving on the YLD's Memphis CLE Team during the 2005-2006 bar year.
New CLE for new lawyers
For lawyers just starting their careers, the YLD announces a new day-long program designed to bridge the gap between preparation and practice. "The New Lawyer Experience," scheduled for Feb. 15, 2008, will emphasize skills development and feature sessions on litigating a case, building a transactional law practice, handling conflicts and maintaining confidentiality. Interactive components will include a peer-to-peer panel with senior-level associates sharing their experiences about working with administrative staff, keeping and billing time, managing networking expectations and pleasing multiple bosses. In the afternoon, participants will select a corporate or litigation track for a more in-depth look at their chosen field. The day will end with a session on achieving professional and personal success in the practice of law. Whether you have just joined the legal profession, need a refresher or are a senior partner responsible for educating associates, make plans now to be part of this unique program.
CLE overview for 2007-2008
In addition to "The New Lawyer Experience," the YLD has an active schedule of CLE planned for the bar year. Under the leadership of Brentwood attorney and CLE Committee Chair Candice Reed, the YLD will present its traditional programs - Trial Practice, Transactional Practice and Demystifying the Ethics Process - but, whenever possible, offer new delivery mechanisms for a web- and tech-savvy generation. Look for opportunities to access CLE content through web casting, video casting and new online courses.
Trial Practice
December 14
This six-hour seminar provides the basics of preparing for and conducting a trial. Topics include making effective opening statements, questioning and choosing a jury, conducting direct- and cross-examination and making persuasive closing arguments.
Transactional Practice
April 25, 2008
This six-hour seminar provides basic information and resources to non-litigating attorneys. Topics include contract drafting, estate planning, mediation, intellectual property, real estate transactions and business entity formation.
Ethics Forum: Demystifying the Ethics Process in Tennessee
May 16, 2008
This three-hour seminar focuses on demystifying the state disciplinary process. Participants will hear from attorneys representing the Board of Professional Responsibility - the state entity that investigates allegations of attorney misconduct - as well as attorneys who represent those accused of wrongdoing.
