Wills for Heroes volunteers needed
The TBA Young Lawyers Division is holding its first Wills for Heroes project in Columbia this Saturday and needs additional volunteers. The project -- which provides wills, powers of attorney and advance directives to first responders -- will take place at the Riverside Armory from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with volunteer training at 8 a.m. Over 200 firefighters, police officers and EMS personnel have signed up for the free legal service. As a result of this overwhelming turnout, additional volunteers are needed. To participate contact John Clark at (931) 388-4022 or jclark@hardinandparkes.com.
TLAW liaison named to YLD board
Tennessee Lawyers Association for Women (TLAW) President Barbara Zoccola has named Memphis attorney Ahsaki Baptist as the TLAW liaison to the TBA Young Lawyers Division Board. Pursuant to the YLD's bylaws, representatives from local, county and specialty bars are entitled to a non-voting seat on the board. Baptist practices law at Wyatt Tarrant & Combs, where she is a member of the Litigation & Dispute Resolution Service Team. She focuses her practice in the areas of commercial litigation and commercial real estate. She is active in her community, volunteering for the Memphis Area Legal Services' Pro Bono Project and as a member of the Memphis and National Bar associations. Baptist graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 2007.

Calling all young lawyers who work or live in the Upper Cumberland! There will be a dutch-treat dinner at Crawdaddy's Restaurant in Cookeville on Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 5:30 p.m. In addition to good food and fellowship, the group will discuss creation of a Young Lawyers Association of the Upper Cumberland, make plans to implement the TBA Young Lawyers Division's service projects for the year -- including Wills for Heroes and Building Healthy Relationships -- discuss recruitment of mock trial coaches, select a public service project for Law Day 2009 and much more! For more information, contact Rachel Moses of the Legal Aid Society in Cookeville at (931) 528-7436 or rmoses@las.org.
Mock Trial 2009 update
Competition Date -- As previously reported, the Tennessee State High School Mock Trial Competition will take place March 13-14 in Nashville. The committee is aware that this date conflicts with the March SAT offering, but it was the only weekend available for the state competition. Team coaches and district coordinators are encouraged to remind students of this conflict early so they do not register for this test date.
Volunteers Needed -- If you have any ideas for a criminal scenario that would work well as this year's problem, or if you are interested in serving on the 2008-2009 Mock Trial Committee please contact chair Marisa Lee Combs at (615) 384-8444 or mcombs@larrywilks.com. Various roles are available, and volunteers do not have to reside in Nashville to assist the committee.
District Coordinators -- If you are planning to serve as a district coordinator for your local competition, please contact committee chair Marisa Lee Combs at (615) 384-8444 or mcombs@larrywilks.com. Please remember that all district competitions must be completed no later than Feb. 28.
