E-DICT under new management
With the start of the new bar year and new leadership for the Young Lawyers Division, the YLD's monthly electronic newsletter E-DICT, is now in the hands of Knoxville lawyer Hanson Tipton. Tipton is a member with Watson, Roach, Batson, Rowell & Lauderback PLC where he practices in the areas of civil litigation, government tort liability, workers' comp and medical malpractice defense. Before joining the firm, he clerked for the late Tennessee Senior Judge John K. Byers. He earned his law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 2002. Tipton previously served the YLD as editor of the Tennessee Young Lawyer and as the Knoxville city captain for the CLE Committee. Many thanks to immediate past editor Mary Petrinjak of Jackson for a job well done as editor of this publication last year. Law school visits on tap for fall
The TBA YLD will be back on campus this fall with its annual law school outreach program. This year the visits will include the new Duncan School of Law in Knoxville, which opens with its first class of part-time students this academic year. Stay tuned for details about the visits. Spending just an hour with law students can really make a difference in their lives and their choices about a career in the law. For questions about the YLD's law school outreach initiative, please contact Membership and Law School Outreach Chair Nathan Shelby at nshelby@raineykizer.com.
Upcoming CLE for new and young lawyers
The TBA YLD has a number of exciting CLEs in the works for the upcoming year as part of its commitment to provide members across the state with interesting, relevant and enjoyable CLE programs.
The first onsite CLE will be Transactional Practice, scheduled for Oct. 22 in Nashville. This six-hour program will cover a range of transactional issues such as choosing a business entity, understanding the M&A process, working with distressed companies, and counseling boards and managers, just to name a few. The program is geared toward new attorneys, as well as those who need a refresher in transactional issues.
Another program already scheduled is the YLD's annual ethics seminar. Set for Feb. 19, 2010, in Knoxville, Memphis and Nashville, this annual program is designed to "demystify" the ethics process through the use of hypotheticals and role-playing.
The YLD CLE Committee also will offer the division's annual trial practice program in April 2010 and produce several web casts throughout the year. In addition, the committee is working on other course ideas and is interested in hearing from you as to what CLEs you would like to see offered. Please contact committee chair Stacie Winkler at swinkler@bakerdonelson.com with any suggestions.
For questions about CLE offerings around the state, feel free to contact your regional captain: Chris McCarty in East Tennessee, Brian Winfrey in Middle Tennessee and Stacie Winkler in West Tennessee.
