YLD responds to flood disaster

The TBA YLD kicked into high gear just days after devastating floods hit Middle and West Tennessee -- activating a toll free hotline for disaster victims to request free legal assistance, coordinating the response among nine legal organizations in the state, and educating lawyers on the legal issues disaster victims often face.

YLD board member and ABA district representative for Tennessee, Matt Potempa, spearheaded the YLD's disaster legal services efforts, while Disaster Relief Chair Joel Wallace took the lead in producing a free one-hour CLE webcast on the types of cases lawyers likely encounter when helping a disaster victim. The webcast, which is available for viewing here, also featured former YLD Disaster Chair Ray Runyon of Clarksville and former Disaster Committee member Tara Aaron of Nashville. The webcast also focused on the YLD-produced Disaster Assistance Manual, which has been a highly requested and used resource as lawyers vounteer to handle cases from those affected by the floods. A second free CLE webcast on the FEMA application and appeal process came from an idea generated by the YLD. More than 300 Tennessee lawyers have taken part in these programs.

The TBA YLD can and should be proud of its quick and vigorous response to the legal needs of flood victims. To sign up as a volunteer to handle a flood-related case or for more resources on to help those affected by flooding visit the TBA's volunteer site

Law Day winners announced
The TBA YLD has announced the winners of the 2010 Tennessee Law Day Art and Essay Competitions. The theme of this year's contest was "Law in the 21st Century: Enduring Traditions, Emerging Challenges." It was designed to spark students' thinking about how society can honor long-standing traditions in the law while addressing new issues and situations that might challenge "old ways" of doing things. First place in the essay contest went to Matthew Street, a senior at First Assembly Christian School in Cordova, while the first place art award went to Chihye Kim, a fifth grade student at Cedar Bluff Elementary in Knoxville. Students will receive cash prizes for their winning entries. Look for a display of the entries at the TBA Convention in Nashville next week. See the winning entries online

New district reps named
A special YLD nominating committee has filled two vacancies among the division's district representatives. In Knoxville, Mike Baisley, a lawyer with Hodges, Doughty & Carson PLLC, has been appointed District 3 Representative. He will serve out the term of Sonda Gifford who stepped down from the position. In Jackson, lawyer Chuck Holliday with Spragins, Barnett & Cobb, has been named the new District 13 Representative. He will serve out the term of Joshua Roberts, who has moved out of state.

Tullahoma service project set
TBA YLD District 7 Representative Aimee Luna will host a yard sale as a fundraiser for Haven of Hope, a domestic violence shelter that serves individuals in Bedford, Coffee, Franklin, Lincoln, Marshall and Moore Counties. The event will be held June 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Anyone interested in volunteering for the sale or donating items should contact Luna at aluna@las.org or (931) 455-7000, ext. 25.

TBA wins ABA grant
The American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division recently announced that the TBA YLD has been selected to receive a grant from the organization. The funds will be used to buy supplies and computer equipment for the YLD's Wills for Heroes program, which provides wills and other end-of-life documents for first responders in Tennessee. Wills for Heroes Committee Chair David Veile applied for the grant and made a strong case why the TBA should be one of the ABA's grantees this year.

TBA board to fill Dixon's seat
The TBA Board of Governors will appoint a member to fill the vacancy created by the election of Jackie Dixon as vice president of the TBA. The appointment will be made at the board's June 5 meeting. Any member who lives or practices in the 5th District (Davidson County) is eligible for appointment. To indicate your interest in the seat, contact TBA Executive Director Allan Ramsaur not later than May 31, 2010. The new board member will serve until the next election, which will take place in spring 2011.

Pro bono opportunity
The TBA has been asked to find a volunteer lawyer to help an elderly man in the Bartlett/Millington area who has dementia and cannot take of his affairs. Anyone interested in learning more should contact Stacey Shrader at the TBA at sshrader@tnbar.org or (615) 383-7421.
