Help welcome new lawyers to the profession
In November, the Tennessee Bar Association and the Young Lawyers Division will welcome new lawyers to the profession with events in Nashville and Chattanooga, and you are invited to join us.

On Monday, Nov. 19, new lawyers in Nashville will be treated to lunch and an open house at the Tennessee Bar Center, compliments of the TBA. Young lawyers are invited to attend and interact with the newest members of the profession. The event will be held immediately following the admission ceremony. Lunch will be served from 12 noon to 2 p.m. If you plan to attend please RSVP to Sarah Stair at sstair@tnbar.org. The bar center is located at 221 Fourth Ave. North, between Church and Union streets in downtown Nashville.

On Tuesday, Nov. 20, the YLD will host a reception for new bar admittees in Chattanooga. The event will be held on the fourth level of the Hamilton County Courthouse Rotunda, outside the Hamilton County Commission Room and will begin immediately following the admission ceremony. All attorneys are invited to attend, enjoy refreshments and welcome the new admittees to the practice of law. For more information contact the YLD's Chattanooga Membership Captain Craig Smith at mcsmith@millermartin.com

Law school visits a success
The YLD Law School Outreach Committee successfully hosted membership and networking events at all four of Tennessee's law schools in late September and October. The events fostered relationships between law students and practicing attorneys, and promoted awareness of the TBA. Not only did the visits enlist almost 80 law student members, but they provided free pizza to hungry students! Thank you to Law School Outreach Committee Chair David Bates, who planned the events, and to all the attorneys who attended.

Mentors needed
The newly launched mentoring program is off to a great start with a number of law students and young attorneys expressing interest in being mentored. Now we are looking for attorneys willing to take on that role! If you would be interested in helping a fellow lawyer, please complete a mentor application and return it to TBA staff member Stacey Shrader via fax at (615) 297-8058 or by email at sshrader@tnbar.org. And remember, you CAN make a difference!

TYL unveils new feature
The YLD's quarterly print publication, the Tennessee Young Lawyer, will unveil a new feature in the Fall 2007 issue. TYL People will provide a place for young lawyers to share news about job moves, promotions and career achievements. Please send news items to TYL Editor Mason Wilson at mason.wilson@cityofclarksville.com. (Our lawyers advise us to say that the editors reserve the right to alter submissions for length, content and format.)

Trial practice CLE on tap
Want to sharpen your litigation skills? Then the three-hour seminar, "Trial Practice for Today's Litigator: Prepare, Persuade & Prevail In (and Out of) the Courtroom," sponsored by the Young Lawyers Division is for you. Whether your practice involves time in the courtroom or preparing for cases that ultimately settle or are resolved on dispositive motion, this program will equip you with practical tools to enhance your litigation skills.

Hear from practitioners as they discuss how to prepare and examine expert witnesses, including deposing opposing witnesses and effectively using their testimony, as well as technology, in pre-trial hearings. Interact with a panel of practicing litigators and sitting judges as they share their own methods, or those they have observed, for effectively communicating with juries. And learn how to handle post-trial issues such as collecting damages, initiating an appeal and managing client expectations.

The course will be offered on Dec. 14, in Nashville, Knoxville, Memphis and Chattanooga from 1-4:20 p.m. local time. To register visit TennBarU on the web or call (615) 383-7421 or (800) 899-6993. And remember, you can take this class for free using the three prepaid CLE credits you received with your membership.
