Dates set for law school visits
The YLD Law School Outreach Committee continues its membership and networking events at Tennessee's law schools with three visits in October.

UT College of Law -- Next Thursday, Oct. 4, the committee will be at the UT College of Law. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. committee members will staff an information table and talk to students about the benefits of TBA membership; at noon a free pizza lunch will be served; and from 6:30-9:30 p.m. students and local attorneys will gather at the Downtown Grill & Brewery (424 South Gay Street) for appetizers and drinks. Those who are up for a challenge are encouraged to stick around for the Student Bar Association's weekly Rump Court following the TBA reception.

University of Memphis -- On Thursday, Oct. 18, the committee will travel to the University of Memphis for a similar line-up of events, with an information table from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., pizza lunch at noon and an evening reception from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at The Vault (529 S Highland). The evening event, planned in conjunction with the Student Bar Association, will conclude just in time for the start of the students' weekly Bar Review event.

Vanderbilt -- On Friday, Oct. 19, the committee will be at Vanderbilt Law School to host an information table from 1-4 p.m. and sponsor the school's Friday night happy hour known as Blackacre from 4-6 p.m.

Please come to any (or all) of these events! For more information contact Law School Outreach Committee Chair David Bates at dbates@duboislegal.com.

Save the date for mock trial
It's not too early to start thinking about mock trial. The 2008 problem will be released Nov. 15, and posted on the TBA's mock trial web site. Local competitions will occur throughout the months of January and February, and the state competition will be held March 14-15, 2008, in the newly refurbished Metro Courthouse in downtown Nashville. High school teams across the state need attorney coaches to help them prepare for competition. The local competitions, as well as the state competition, need attorney volunteers to serve as judges, scorers and bailiffs. Those who volunteer both days will get a complimentary hotel room and appreciation dinner on Friday night of the competition. Contact Mock Trial Committee Chair Colleen Sweeney for information about getting involved. She can be reached at csweeney@sedlaw.com

ABA YLD names service project
The American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division has chosen "Wills for Heroes" as its public service project for the 2007-2008 bar year. The program provides basic estate planning for first responder personnel. Initially developed in response to the 9/11 tragedy, the project allows first responders to come to a designated location and have a basic will, advance directive and/or power of attorney prepared and executed onsite. TBA YLD President-elect Michelle Sellers has taken the lead in implementing the program in Tennessee. Contact her at msellers@raineykizer.com to get involved. Trial Practice CLE on tap
Want to sharpen your litigation skills? Then the three-hour seminar, "Trial Practice for Today's Litigator: Prepare, Persuade & Prevail In (and Out of) the Courtroom," sponsored by the Young Lawyers Division is for you. Whether your practice involves time in the courtroom or preparing for cases that ultimately settle or are resolved on dispositive motion, this program will equip you with practical tools to enhance your litigation skills. Hear from practitioners as they discuss how to prepare and examine expert witnesses, including deposing opposing witnesses and effectively using their testimony, as well as technology, in pre-trial hearings. Interact with a panel of practicing litigators and sitting judges as they share their own methods, or those they have observed, for effectively communicating with juries. And learn how to handle post-trial issues such as collecting damages, initiating an appeal and managing client expectations. The course will be offered in Nashville, Knoxville, Memphis and Chattanooga from 1-3 p.m. local time. To register call (615) 383-7421 or (800) 899-6993.

2008 Law Day theme chosen
The YLD will hold its annual Law Day Art and Essay Competition for students in grades K-12 this spring. The theme for the upcoming year is "The Rule of Law: Foundation for Communities of Opportunity and Equity," which will emphasize the law's daily effect on Americans. Of note, the 2008 celebration also marks the 50th anniversary of Law Day observances. Read more about Law Day at www.abanet.org. For information about Law Day activities contact Public Service Chair Jenny Rogers at jcoro@bellsouth.net.
