'Just Mercy' Aims for Justice on Death Row, in Hollywood

Bryan Stevenson has led one of the most successful efforts to combat mass incarceration and racial injustice in the U.S. legal system and now a new legal drama documents his life, ABC News reports. The film is based on Stevenson’s 2014 memoir “Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption,” which centers on the case that led him to create the Equal Justice Initiative. Since founding the initiative, he has challenged more than 125 death row convictions. The movie will be released nationwide on Jan. 10.

Lawyer Turned Filmmaker Talks About Ties to Memphis

With the December release of his feature film, “Hell on the Border,” filmmaker Wes Miller seeks to tell the true story of Bass Reeves, a black lawman fighting to protect the same frontier that oppressed him. A native of Jackson, but raised in Memphis, Miller had his own trouble with the law before becoming a civil rights attorney. But after nearly a decade in the law and frustrations with practicing, he decided to pursue a new career. He considers his ties to Memphis strong, saying coming home recharges him.
