Many employers, however, are uncertain over whether to dismiss teasing or insults as innocuous or to treat complaints of such conduct as harassment. Although anti-discrimination laws do not protect a victim who was bullied for a reason other than his/her status as a member of a protected class, employers should not ignore this conduct, as it could become the basis of an employee’s claims for negligent hiring, negligent supervision, intentional infliction of emotional distress, assault, etc.
