Immigration Law Forum 2018

Event Types:
CLE Programming
Date:
Friday, April 6, 2018 - 8:30am

This seminar will offer practical tips to both experienced immigration attorneys as well as those practitioners who are just getting started, or attorneys whose representation of foreign national clients in juvenile or criminal matters could touch on immigration-related issues.

The morning presentations will involve three one-hour panels with speakers from the federal government, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Office of Chief Counsel and Homeland Security Investigations), and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (Nashville Field Office).  In the rapidly-changing landscape of immigration law practice, these presentations will offer valuable insight for those attorneys who routinely interface with these agencies.  And with the new USCIS Field Office scheduled to begin operations within the next several months, don’t miss the opportunity to hear from its director!

The two afternoon panels will address issues of concern to attorneys with foreign national clients in juvenile courts or who have landed in the criminal justice system.  Juvenile courts potentially offer an opportunity for certain foreign nationals to begin the long process of seeking residency in the United States.  For juvenile foreign nationals in trouble, juvenile courts may offer a number of means to achieve outcomes that avoid or reduce immigration consequences.  For adult foreign nationals in the criminal justice system, many unwittingly suffer overly negative immigration consequences from uninformed plea bargains, or no longer have access to their records for immigration processes due to thoughtless expungements.  The panelists for the afternoon will offer tips on how to handle these issues to help attorneys guide their clients to more successful outcomes in these venues.

Lunch will be included, allowing for networking.

Immigration Law Forum Reception
The TBA Immigration Law section will hold a cocktail reception immediately following its forum on April 6. Join friends and colleagues to relax and unwind after the program.

This event provides a great opportunity to meet leadership of the organization while networking with attorneys and professionals with a similar focus. Forum attendance is not required to attend the reception.
