Court Upholds Jury’s $6M Judgment Against Ford

The Tennessee Supreme Court today reinstated a $6.6 million judgment against Ford Motor Company that had been imposed by a Shelby County jury after a six-year-old boy sustained significant injuries when his seatbelt malfunctioned during an accident. The Court of Appeals found the award was excessive and based on jury sympathy. It recommended reducing the amount to $1.9 million. The Supreme Court unanimously rejected the appeals court’s reasoning, finding that the jury’s verdict was supported by evidence and was within the range of reasonableness.
