Memphis-Area Lawmakers Try Again At Creating Municipal Schools

Lawmakers have filed a new bill to legalize the creation of municipal school systems despite the previous attempt being overturned in November by U.S. District Judge Samuel Mays, the Memphis Business Journal reports. The new set of bills is designed to lift the 1998 ban on municipal schools statewide. Proponents hope it will stand up in court, since Mays ruled the previous law was unconstitutional because it applied only to Shelby County.
