2 Honored at EJU Awards Dinner

MURFREESBORO, Sept. 3, 2015 — Two Tennessee lawyers were recognized for their commitment to access to justice on Wednesday during the Equal Justice University Awards Dinner.

Lenny Croce with the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands received the B. Riney Green Award for his collaborative efforts to promote law reform for the protection of low income Tennesseans. And Robert Downs with Legal Aid of East Tennessee received the New Advocate of the Year Award for his creative and effective advocacy efforts on behalf of domestic violence victims in the Knoxville area. The New Advocate Award recognizes an individual who produces outstanding benefits for individual clients and the communities in which they live and have been with their legal services program for five years or less.

In presenting the award that carries his name, Green noted that Croce has been “a gift to poor, sick, elderly and those in need in Tennessee” and that “hundreds of thousands of Tennesseans over the last 20 years have had access to health care” in large part due to his efforts.

The Awards Dinner also featured national legal aid leader Ramon Arias, whose keynote address focused on the struggles, successes and opportunities ahead for the legal aid community.

Arias noted that “together Tennessee has built and continues to build” an access to justice community “that few states can match.”

Arias lauded the role of the Tennessee Supreme Court, the TBA, local and specialty bars as well as private attorneys, law schools and non-legal partners as all supporting equal justice work “in creative and meaningful ways.“ (Photos by Liz Todaro of the TBA)
