YLD Affiliate News for January 2014

American Bar Association YLD -- The ABA YLD invites Tennessee young lawyers to apply for leadership appointments for the 2014-2015 bar year. According to the group, the skills, passion and perspective of young lawyers from across the country are essential to building a vibrant, inclusive and multicultural corps of volunteer leaders. Positions are available on committees, boards and teams. The application deadline is Feb. 15. Contact Andrew Schpak with any questions. Affiliate young lawyer groups in the state also are encouraged to apply for a grant to assist with member and public service projects. The deadline for that program is March 1. Finally, the ABA YLD has announced its Law Day Art Contest for students in grades 9-12. The 2014 contest theme is "American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters." Chattanooga Bar Association YLD -- On Jan. 25, the CBA YLD teamed up with Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) to host a pro bono legal advice clinic for low-income citizens at the Chattanooga Housing Authority. Although it was a cold day, the group reports some 20 lawyers participated and 24 individual clients received free legal advice. Pictured below are a number of those who volunteered at the event. Knoxville Bar Association Barristers -- The Barristers will hold its next meeting Feb. 12 at 5 p.m. at the Bistro by the Bijou. The next happy hour is scheduled for Feb. 27 at Drink: The Wine Dive beginning at 6 p.m. The group will hold the local mock trial competition Feb. 15 and  22. Volunteers are needed to help with set up and scoring the competition. An attorney coach is also needed to help a team. Contact Karrah Leary or Kathryn Ellis to get involved.

The Barristers also recently announced the results of its Canned Food Drive Competition. First place for total pounds donated went to the law firm of Doughty & Carson, first place for most pounds per attorney went to Legal Aid of East Tennessee and the most peanut butter donated award went to Lewis Thomason. The overall effort brought in $23,852 and 1753 pounds of food -- 10 times the amount raised last year! Memphis Bar Association YLD -- The Shelby County High School Mock Trial Competition will take place Feb. 10-13 and 18-19. The MBA YLD is looking for attorney volunteers to score the competition during the first five nights.
