YLD Affiliate News for July 2013
American Bar Association YLD -- There is still time to register for the ABA Annual Meeting, which will take place Aug. 8-13 in San Francisco. In addition, ABA affiliates in Tennessee are encouraged to submit nominations for the annual National Outstanding Young Lawyer Award, which recognizes an ABA young lawyer in good standing who exhibits professional excellence, service to the profession and the bar, service to the community, and/or a reputation for or the advancement of legal ethics and professional responsibility. Blount County Bar Association YLD -- The Blount County YLD has elected a new president. Donna Ridgel takes over from George Maifair. Ridgel is a general practioner in Alcoa. Knoxville Bar Association Barristers -- The Barristers will hold its next meeting Aug. 14 at 5 p.m. at the Bistro by the Bijou, 807 S. Gay St. The group also is holding its annual school supply drive now through Aug. 9. Organized by the Hunger & Poverty Relief Committee, the supplies will benefit the ChildHelp Foster Family Agency of East Tennessee and the children they serve. The group also is seeking volunteers for the 2nd Annual East Tennessee Accessibility Symposium planned for Aug. 23. The event will present briefings on the various sections of the Americans with Disabilities Act and field questions from professionals in the design industry and those who benefit from accessibility. Finally, the Barristers and the KBA are joining forces to co-host the annual four-person golf scramble. This year's event will be held Sept. 20 at Avalon Golf & Country Club. The entry fee of $100 per player includes green fees, cart, range balls, box lunch, a commemorative gift, two drink tickets, prizes and a cookout following the tournament. All entries and payments must be received by Sept. 5. Tee times are available from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Memphis Bar Association YLD -- The MBA YLD will host a post bar exam Happy Hour tonight (July 31) at 5:30 p.m. at Aldo's Pizza Pies, 100 S. Main St. Exam takers and YLD members are invited to enjoy free drinks courtesy of Econ One. On Aug. 22, the group will host a night of bowling and fun at Billy Hardwick's All Star Lanes, 1576 S, White Station Rd. The event will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Thanks to the sponsorship of Counsel on Call, the cost for MBA members will be $5 per person, which includes shoe rental, two hours of bowling and drinks. Finally, the group will host its annual Golf Tournament on Oct. 4. The event will begin with a 1 p.m. shotgun start at Glen Eagle Golf Course. Upper Cumberland Young Lawyers Association -- The Upper Cumberland Young Lawyers sponsored the annual Ann Cameron Golf Classic on June 15, which raised about $10,000 for the Cancer Fund at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Throughout the months of June and July the group is organizing a Diaper Drive for Genesis House, a local domestic violence shelter. In August and September, the group will collect diapers and personal hygiene items for another domestic violence shelter, the Avalon Center in Cumberland County. It plans to continue collection efforts for other area non-profits throughout the year. Donations should be dropped off at Tessa Lawson's office (145 S. Jefferson Ave., Suite A-2, Cookeville) or the Legal Aid Office (9 S. Jefferson Ave., Ste 102, Cookeville).
