Karen Boyd was licensed to practice law in Georgia in 2005. After working for a year at a small Savannah law firm where she represented the state at commitment hearings at the local mental hospital, handled uncontested divorces, and served as Guardian ad Litem for many children in juvenile court, Karen was offered a position as staff attorney and mediator at the State Board of Workers' Compensation. In that capacity, Karen mediated in excess of 1300 workers' compensation cases with a success rate of greater than 90%. She conducted research for administrative law judges at both the hearing and appellate level, and reviewed stipulated settlement documents submitted to the Board for approval. Other legal experience includes an intensive summer program through Emory University's Barton Clinic where she was trained on juvenile court procedure and cases and then interned as a summer clerk for Judge Peggy Walker of Douglasville Juvenile Court. Karen also spent 8 months during law school interning at the US Attorney's Office, Eastern District of Virginia. During this internship (with her Virginia 3rd year practice license), she appeared in federal court where she accepted pleas, represented the US in misdemeanors and DUI cases, and acted as 3rd chair attorney in a multi-week, multi-defendant white collar fraud jury trial. In Savannah, Karen served as vice president and then president of the Savannah division of the Georgia Association of Women Lawyers. She was a board member and secretary of Savannah Working Against Human Trafficking, where, among other tasks, she coordinated and ran a community wide church program educating citizens about human trafficking in the area. She was a guest speaker at numerous CLE courses on both mediation and workers' compensation, including the July 2010 Southern Association of Workers' Compensation Administrators Conference. Karen relocated to Kingsport, Tennessee at the end of 2012. She holds bar licenses in both Georgia (currently inactive) and Tennessee. She provides volunteer legal services for Legal Aid of Eastern Tennessee and runs a small practice focusing mainly on will drafting and pro bono work. She is also a Rule 31 Listed Mediator (General Civil Mediation) in Tennessee.
