Hon. Randal S. Mashburn was appointed U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Middle District of Tennessee in January of 2012, following a lengthy career in private practice. Before going on the bench, Judge Mashburn’s practice focused heavily on business disputes, bankruptcy, debtor-creditor issues, workouts, and insolvency law. He spent nearly three decades representing plaintiffs, defendants, creditors, debtors, trustees, committees, examiners and receivers, as well as himself serving as a court-appointed bankruptcy examiner and Chapter 11 trustee. In addition to extensive experience as a litigator and bankruptcy advisor, a significant portion of his practice was devoted to serving as mediator for a wide range of disputes, particularly involving complex business and financial matters. Most of his legal career was spent at Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, where he served stints as practice group chair, board member and in a variety of other management and leadership roles. Judge Mashburn currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Nashville Bar Association and is a Fellow of the Nashville Bar Foundation. He was a founding member and past President of the Tennessee Association of Professional Mediators, is a past-president of the Mid-South Commercial Law Institute and served for a number of years as a board member of the Nashville Conflict Resolution Center. During his legal career, Judge Mashburn achieved a wide range of distinctions and honors, including being listed repeatedly in The Best Lawyers in America publication, Chambers USA Ranking Guide of America’s Leading Business Lawyers, Mid-South Super Lawyers' "Top 100 Attorneys in Tennessee," BusinessTN Magazine's "Top 150 Lawyers in Tennessee," the Nashville Post's "101 Top Middle Tennessee Lawyers," and the Nashville Business Journal's "Best of the Bar." He is certified as a business bankruptcy specialist by the American Board of Certification. Before beginning his legal practice, he served as a judicial law clerk for judges on the United States District Court and the Tennessee Court of Appeals. He has contributed to dozens of publications and has spoken frequently on alternative dispute resolution, bankruptcy, and creditors’ rights for bar associations, industry groups and continuing legal education programs.
