Stephen L. Shields is a partner in the Memphis based law firm of Jackson, Shields, Yeiser & Holt. His legal practice focuses on employment, labor, education and construction law matters. Since 1991, he has been listed in Best Lawyers In America. He is also listed in Mid-South Super Lawyers as well as the Winter 2010 edition of Memphis Business Quarterly as a MBQ Player in employment law.

As an attorney, Mr. Shields has spent hundreds of hours representing clients in arbitrations and mediations. Apart from his law practice, he is a Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 31 Listed Mediator and has mediated cases involving employment, discrimination, fee dispute and construction issues. Mr. Shields is currently a member of the Memphis Bar Association, Tennessee Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. He is also a member of the Alternative Dispute Section of each of these three Associations, the Tennessee Association of Professional Mediators, as well as a member of the Tennessee Valley Mediation Association.

Mr. Shields has authored several publications concerning mediation including Alternative Dispute Resolutions in Tennessee (Professional Education Systems) and Alternative Dispute Resolution: Staying in Business and Out of Court (Institute of Business Law).

Mr. Shields is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Memphis School of Law where, since 1980, he has taught the course on Alternative Dispute Resolution. His course focuses on both the legal and practical aspects of the mediation and arbitration of employment law matters and labor disputes. Mr. Shields is also a frequent speaker on alternative dispute resolution topics. His most recent presentation was “Mediating An Employment Case (In A Bad Economy) which was sponsored by the Memphis Bar Association ADR Section.

Mr. Shields is the past President of the Memphis Bar Foundation and past Chair of the Memphis Bar Association’s section on Labor and Employment Law. Currently he is serving as Treasurer of the ADR Section of the Memphis Bar Association. He has served on numerous Boards, and in 2005 was also appointed by the Commissioner of Education to the Tennessee Educators Ethics Task Force.
