InReed,thedefendantwasconvictedofshoplifting.Atthesecond f5,1 phaseofthetrial,thestateattemptedtoshowthedefendanthadthreepriorconvictions,thusestablishingastatusofrepeatoffender.581S.W.2dat146.The 8/5 deputyclerktestifiedtoinformationcontainedinthe"court's'yellowjackets'concerningthesepriorcases."Id.at147.Copiesoftheentriesmadeonthe ,  jacketsofthefileswerealsoenteredintoevidence.Id.Apanelofthiscourtruled   thattheexhibitswere"woefullyinadequateforthepurposesintended."Id.Asto d thefirstconviction,thefilejacketindicatedajuryverdictofguilty;buttherewasnothingonthejackettoindicatethetrialjudgeapprovedtheverdictorenteredjudgment.Thedocumentalsodidnotindicatewhentheconvictionhadoccurred.Onthesecondconviction,thejacketdidshowthetrialjudgehadenteredjudgment;however,thedateofconvictiondidnotmatchthedatechargedintheindictment.Duetothevariances,thetrialjudgerefusedtosubmitthispriorconvictionforconsiderationbythejury.SeeTenn.CodeAnn.5510403(g)(2)(theindictment X chargingthedefendantasarepeatoffendermustallegethedateofthepriorconviction).Forthethirdconviction,thejacketcontainedanentryimposingsentenceafterthedefendant'sguiltyplea.Thiscourtconcludedthat"thisentrycannotbeaffordedthedignityofafinaljudgment"anddeterminedthattheentrywasinadequatebecauseitdidnotcontainthedateofdisposition.Id. T$   Inconclusion,thiscourtruledasfollows:X 4Wefindthattheproofinthiscaseistotallylackingtoestablishthepriorconvictionsasallegedintheindictment.Forsomereasonnotapparentintherecord,theStatedidnotoffertoprovetheseallegedpriorconvictionsbyintroducingtheminutesofthecourt.Rather,theStateembarkedonaprotractedandconfusingcourseseekingtoestablishitscasebyhavingadeputyclerkofthecourttotestifyfrominformationcontainedonorinthecourt's"yellowjackets"concerningthesepriorcases.  ***$& < ...Thedefendant,amongotherthings,isentitledtobeapprisedoftheaccuratedatesofthepriorconvictionswhichthestateintendstorelyonforenhancedpunishmentpurposes.Also,thestateisobligedtoprovethattherewasafinalconvictionforeach 8/5 oftheseprioroffenses.Thesethingswerenotdoneinthiscase.4 $X#$Id.at147,148.     Inourview,therulinginReeddoesnotapplytothesecircumstances. J ThestatemayestablishthepriorconvictionssolongastheproofofferedisadmissibleunderourRulesofEvidence.TheReeddecisiondoesnotrequirethat B  theminutesoftheconvictingcourtaretheonlyacceptablemannerforestablishingtheprioroffenses.InStatev.Woodall,wherethedefendantwasadjudicatedan z  habitualoffender,thesupremecourtheldthatseveralavenueswereopentothestatewhenprovingpriorconvictions.729S.W.2d91,93(Tenn.1987).Certifiedcopiesofofficialrecordsofconvictionscouldbeusedaswellas"officialminutes,testimonyofpoliceofficialsorcourtpersonnel."Id.InStatev.Rea,865S.W.2d   923,924(Tenn.Crim.App.1992),thiscourtruledthestatecouldutilizeTenn.R.Evid.803(8),thehearsayexceptiongoverningadmissibilityofpublicrecords,asameansofprovingpriorconvictions.  Inthiscase,thedeputyclerktestifiedwithoutobjectionfromthecourtfilesthatthedefendanthadbeenpreviouslyconvictedofDUIonthreeoccasions.Healsotestifiedastowhentheoffensesoccurredandwhentheconvictionswereentered.Inourview,thistestimonyissufficienttoestablishthepriorconvictions.  (II).
