ThisCourtisonceagaincalledupontodecidewitheraninjurysustainedenroutetoworkiscompensable.Weconcludethatitisnotandreversethetrialcourtsfindingthatitis. Regrettably,thiscaseinvolvesmorethananinjury.DonaldGrotondiedfrominjurieshesustainedinacarwreckwhiletravelingtoworkonJanuary14,1994.HeworkedforJohnColemanHayes,P.C.anengineeringfirmundercontractwithNashvillesairportauthoritytosupervisenoiseabatementmodificationsbeingmadetohomesintheAntiochandDonelsonneighborhoodsclosetotheairport.Grotonwasoneoftwoinspectorswhoexaminedtheworkofthecontractors. Heusedhisownvehicleinhiswork.TheemployerpaidGrotonϜmileagefordrivingfromtheofficetojobsitesandfromonejobsitetoanother.TheemployerdidnotpayGrotonfordrivingfromhishometotheofficeortothefirstjobsiteofthedayifGrotonwenttherefirst.Likewise,theemployerdidnotpayGrotonfortravelawayfromtheofficeorfromthelastjobsiteattheendoftheworkday. Onthedateoftheaccident,Grotondidnotreportfordutyateithertheofficeorajobsiteasusual.JamesMichaelSmith,JohnColemanHayessconstructionmanager,calledGrotonthedaybeforeandinstructedhimtogotoajobsiteofasistercompany,JohnColemanHayesConstructionCompany.SmithneededsomesurveyingworkdoneandGrotonknewhowtodoit. ThesitewasinGoodlettsville,farawayfromthejobsitesaroundtheairport,butGrotonhadbeentothesitebeforeandknewhowtogetthere.Smithgavehimnoinstructionsonhowtogetthere.TheaccidentoccurredwhileGrotonwasdrivinghisvehiclefromhishomeinLebanontotheGoodlettsvillesite. Asageneralrule,workersinjuredwhiletravelingtoandfromworkintheirownvehiclesattheirownexpensearenotentitledtoworkerscompensation.Lollarv.WalMartStores,Inc.,767S.W.2d143,144(Tenn.1989).Therearesomerecognizedexceptionstothisrule,suchaswhentheworkerisactuallyontheemployerspremises,butnoneofthoseexceptionsapplyinthiscase.Grotonwassimplygoingtoworkwhenhewasinjured.Hewasgoingtoadifferentjobsitethanusual,buthewassimplytravelingtoworknevertheless.
