| Tougher DUI law one of many taking effect Jan. 1 |
People who have a DUI conviction are about to see tougher steps taken if they are stopped again. Under a new law that takes effect Jan. 1, these suspects will be required to take a blood alcohol test if police believe they're driving drunk, WPLN reports. Most people now accused of DUI have the right to refuse to take a breathalyzer or blood test.
Other laws taking effect on Jan. 1 include:
-- laws aimed at curbing meth production and prescription drug abuse;
-- a law requiring photo ID for voting;
-- an immigration law that calls for employers to use the "E-Verify" system to ensure workers entered the state legally; and
-- a law aimed at strengthening the state's sex offender laws. |
