Attorney advertising is a much-debated topic among lawyers. Some lawyers feel that advertising is “beneath” the profession and personifies the stereotype of the “ambulance chasing lawyer.” Other lawyers feel that it is incumbent on attorneys to ensure that potential clients have the opportunity to hear from attorneys through advertising prior to retaining counsel.

There are various methods of attorney advertising, including:
• Direct mailers sent to persons arrested or involved in an accident
• Printed advertisement displayed in public places
• Printed advertisement displayed in materials such as periodicals
• Online advertisement
• Television advertisement

Whether you advertise and how you advertise is a decision you should make after considering several factors including cost, target audience, and estimated return on investment.

As you consider advertising, be sure to thoroughly review Rules 7.1 through 7.4 of the Rules of Professional Conduct, which can be found on the website.
