The state of Tennessee has punished individuals without a “natural hair stylist” license nearly $100,000 since 2009, the ABA Journal reports. Each instance of unlicensed work can be punished up to $1,000, with some stylists racking up multiple fees. A pending bill in the legislature would repeal the licensing requirement for natural hair stylists, joining 23 other states.
