Both Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery and American Bar Association President Bob Carlson released statements this week in support of the passage of the First Step Act, a bipartisan criminal justice reform bill that President Trump is expected to sign into law. “It is aptly named legislation, for this is a good first step in equipping those involved in the correctional system to enable better outcomes,” said Slatery. Carlson said the ABA is “proud” to support several of the bill’s provisions, including ones that ease mandatory minimum sentences and give federal judges more flexibility to make exceptions.
