A federal judge on Friday dismissed a $250 million libel suit against The Washington Post regarding its coverage of an encounter between a Native American activist and a Kentucky high school student, The Washington Post reports. The lawsuit was brought by the parents of Nicholas Sandmann, who was attending an anti-abortion rally in Washington D.C. where he was filmed seemingly trying to intimidate the activist while wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat. U.S. District Judge William O. Bertelsman ruled that the Post articles and tweets regarding Sandmann were not defamatory, maintaining that the claims in the complaint were “not supported by the plain language in the article(s)” and that “few principles of law are as well-established as the rule that statements of opinion are not actionable in libel actions.” Sandmann still has pending cases against CNN and NBC Universal.
