Save the date of April 26, 2013 for the Disability Section CLE planned for the TBA center.

Our section is indebted to former member and now ALJ David Ettinger of Nashville ODAR for his article. We thank section member and section executive committee member Eric Buchanan for his article as well.  The number and frequency of these newsletters depend on you and your willingness to submit articles.  Short articles are fine and in fact preferred.

Somewhat nerdy news:

Syracuse University completed a snapshot in time study of federal court filings in SSID under Title XVI,  cases. This can be found at http://trac.syr.edu/tracreports/civil/288/. The study traced case filings for June 2012 as well as the first 9 months of FY 2012.  The study showed that filings were up 19.4% from the same period last year and up 62.6% from the same period 5 years ago. There were 860 filings nationwide with the highest number of filings coming from the Middle District of Florida (Tampa) with 64 and the Central District of California (Los Angeles) with 60.  By contrast, Wyoming had no filings; North Dakota had one; Maine and Hawaii each had 2.  None of the three Tennessee Districts made the top or bottom ten. For July 2012, the month after the study, the Western District had 6 filings; the Middle District 10 fillings and the Eastern District 8 filings.  Interestingly, for the nine month period, the Eastern District of Arkansas was second in the nation with 239 filings. This study deals with SSI disability, meaning that all appellants are poor as well impaired.

Secondly, we can now access our own SS related earnings records online by pursuing a link on the Social Security home page. I recently checked my own earnings. The document I received and printed looked identical to the statements I formerly received by mail.
