The Environmental Law Section is an active and productive TBA Section.  I am eager to continue the work of this Section this year.  Thanks to Rick Hitchcock for leading the Section as Chair over the past year.  I would like to welcome our new board members:  Middle Tennessee Delegate Anne Davis; West Tennessee Delegate Jim Lenschau, and East Tennessee Delegate Willa Kalaidjian.

This Section serves its members in multiple ways.  Each year this Section co-sponsors a 13+ hour Environmental Law CLE track and reception for the TDEC Commissioner in conjunction with the TDEC Solid Waste Conference in Gatlinburg in April; e-publishes this quarterly Newsletter to its 200 Section members; and sponsors the John Hastings law student writing competition with a cash prize.  The Section has also presented a 3-hour CLE geared to provide environmental law basics to general practitioners the past couple of years and anticipates presenting a similar CLE in January 2014.  Thank you to each Board member and Section member who works behind the scenes to provide these opportunities for our members.  To me the most important benefit the Section offers is that it creates a network of environmental lawyers from across the State of Tennessee and various practice settings.  Although we may live and practice hours apart, the CLE programs, Commissioner’s reception, and Newsletter close that distance and allow us to benefit from one another’s expertise.

There are many ways to get involved in this Section and we welcome your involvement.  Contact Darlene Marsh if you would like to write an article for or sponsor the Newsletter.  Contact Austin Payne at TDEC if you are interested in presenting for the Environmental Law track at the Solid Waste Conference.  Feel free to contact me or another Executive Council member if you have topics you would like to be addressed by the Section in an article or CLE.  I look forward to the Section having another productive year.
