This week's escape of a prisoner from the Bedford County courthouse points to a continuing security problem that must be addressed, the Times-Gazette reports. A repeat offender due for sentencing on drugs and weapon charges slipped through the fingers of sheriff's deputies while being transported to the jail, located only a block away. Courthouse officials are discussing ways to improve security, although they are hampered by the design of the courthouse, which was built in the mid-1930s.
