TBA Law Blog

Welcome to the inaugural year of the new Animal Law Section of the TBA!

We encourage you to join us and we welcome all perspectives on legal issues surrounding animals.  In the few shorts months of our Section's existence, we have presented CLE programs and held discussions on such various topics as:  service animals and accessibility; estate planning for one's pets; owner's rights and responsibilities for taking pets into dog parks, apartments, etc.; soring of the Tennessee Walking Horse, equine slaughter for human consumption, and various other topics.  In the upcoming months, we will continue our focus on some of the these topics, and we will also address such matters as rights and responsibilities of livestock owners, use of growth hormones in livestock and their potential effect on the food chain, fencing/containment laws, victims' rights in dog bite cases, hunting for food/sport/population control, and many other interesting topics.

Join us!

We encourage every member of the Bar with an interest in laws regarding animals to join us.  We understand that many issues involving animals evoke an emotional response; the Animal Law Section of the TBA encourages open and respectful dialogue from ALL viewpoints and perspectives, and we welcome each of you to join the Animal Law Section.

Leadership Opportunities!

Already a member?  We have several volunteer opportunities available at the present time.  Our executive committee still has a spot or two available.  The executive committee meets on a monthly basis via telephone; each call usually lasts no more than 30 minutes, as we strive to be respectful of everyone's time.  These calls help us plan outstanding CLE programs, such as our inaugural CLE program held earlier this summer.  We also encourage our Section members to write brief articles concerning animal law related issues of the day for any/all TBA publications, as appropriate.  Also, we have an opportunity available for someone to serve as Vice Chair and take over the Chair's duties in summer 2016.
