Jane Eskind, the first woman in Tennessee to win a statewide election, died today (Aug. 4). She was 83. Eskind won a seat on the Public Service Commission in 1980. She made her first bid for public office in 1978, winning the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat held by Howard Baker Jr., but lost to Baker in the general election. In 1994, Eskind became the first woman to chair the Tennessee Democratic Party. WSMV has more.
