State Rep. Joe Armstrong testified in his own defense on the witness stand today, where he claimed a trusted accountant was responsible for profiting off of a tax hike that Armstrong voted for. Armstrong stands trial for allegedly conspiring with the accountant, Charles Stivers, to cheat the IRS and cover up the $321,000 he made from a 2007 cigarette tax stamp hike. Senior U.S. District Judge Thomas Phillips sent jurors to delilberate this afternoon, sending them home a few hours later, to resume deliberations on Monday. Knoxnews has more
