Tennessee Republican Rep. Jeremy Faison, R-Crosby, has filed a new bill that would prevent future private prison contracts from containing occupancy guarantees, The Tennessean reports. Faison believes that if passed, the measure could usher in a phasing out of private prisons, which currently house one-third of the state’s inmates. The legislation comes after revelations surrounding the Trousdale Turner Correctional Center, a CoreCivic-operated prison that was found in an audit to have engaged in questionable operational practices.
