Gov. Bill Lee will not stop the first execution of his term, rejecting a plea for mercy from death row inmate Donnie Edward Johnson, who is scheduled to die Thursday, the Tennessean reports. Johnson was convicted in the 1984 murder of his wife, Connie Johnson, in Memphis. “After a prayerful and deliberate consideration of Don Johnson‘s request for clemency, and after a thorough review of the case, I am upholding the sentence of the State of Tennessee and will not be intervening,” Lee said in a brief statement. Johnson is set to die by lethal injection at 7 p.m. Thursday.
