MANAGING ATTORNEY

LEGAL AID OF EAST TENNESSEE ― KNOXVILLE

Do you want a meaningful job that makes a real difference in your community and in the lives of your clients? Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) seeks a full-time Managing Attorney for the firm’s four Knoxville area offices. The position will be based in the main Knoxville office.

LAET is a nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to low-income residents of 26 East Tennessee counties, including Knox, Sevier, Loudon, and Blount counties.

The Managing Attorney leads, directs, and manages the daily operations and supervises the staff in the main Knoxville office and other smaller area offices. The Managing Attorney also maintains an active caseload in LAET’s core areas, including consumer protection, eviction and foreclosure defense, protection of victims of domestic violence, and public benefit cases. In addition, the Managing Attorney promotes the visibility of LAET within the communities covered by the office and among members of the bar and judiciary.

This position reports directly to the Director of Litigation & Advocacy.

Highlighted Requirements:

  • Admitted to the Tennessee Bar or admitted to the bar of another state with the ability to waive into Tennessee.
  • At least eight years’ experience practicing law, with the ideal candidate having at least 10 years of civil legal experience with an emphasis on litigation. 
  • Prior management or supervisory experience. Proven ability to lead a team of attorneys and paralegals.
  • A demonstrated commitment to high-quality legal work and equal access to justice.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. 
  • Demonstrated compassion for and experience working with the low-income, disabled, and elderly populations preferred.
  • Experience with an organization funded by Legal Services Corporation is a plus. 
  • Experience working in a union environment is a plus.
  • Spanish language proficiency is highly desirable.
