Position Description:

Description of Position:   Our attorneys represent clients in civil legal matters and work with community organizations and client groups. West Tennessee Legal Services is organized into five practice groups: Housing; Consumer; Benefits/Special Education; Family, including domestic violence cases; and the Senior Citizens Law Project.  Candidate should have a strong commitment to access for equal justice for our low-income neighbors in West Tennessee who face overwhelming problems regarding basic rights to shelter security, income security, financial security, special education and freedom from abuse for which there is a legal solution.  This position collaborates with other practice groups within WTLS and with community partners.

 

Housing/Consumer/Benefits Attorney:   This attorney will work in our Housing, Consumer, and Benefits Units.  The attorney will practice as a generalist handling a variety of legal matters stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, including evictions, debt collection defense, and healthcare benefits matters

Required Skills:

Qualifications:   Applicants must be admitted to practice law in Tennessee and preferably have 3-5 years’ experience. Experience working at a civil legal aid organization is a plus. Additional requirements include:

  • Demonstrated interest in public interest law
  • Experience advocating for the interests of low-income populations
  • Strong academic record
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, computer, and verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to handle a demanding workload
  • Ability to work collaborative, both within WTLS and with community partners
