Attorneys from the Memphis office of Wyatt Tarrant & Combs and medical technology company Medtronic were honored in March during the Ninth Annual Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Initiative (CCPBI) Gala in Nashville. Those participating included Andy Pulliam, ATJ Committee Chair Jim Barry, Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Connie Clark, Andrew Campbell, U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Bernice Donald, Ahsaki Baptist, Jimmy Bradshaw, Robert Crawford, Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Sharon?Lee, Amber Floyd, Odell Horton?and TBA?President Jonathan Steen.

Leitner, Williams, Dooley & Napolitan has named four lawyers as members in the firm. They are: David A. Chapman, who works in the Knoxville office handling transportation issues; James F. Exum III, who works in the Chattanooga office handling premises and motor vehicle liability and general insurance defense; Joseph C. Johnsen, who works in the Nashville office handling civil litigation with a focus on professional liability, construction law and insurance defense; and M. Dean Norris, who handles workers’ compensation as well as general liability claims in the Memphis office.

The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands has hired Zachary Oswald as an attorney in its Nashville office. He will work in the consumer and housing section. Oswald has handled family and consumer law for the agency since July 2014 as a legal fellow through the University of Miami Legal Corps Program. He earned his law degree from the school in 2013.

Former ABA President William T. “Bill” Robinson III, member-in-charge of the Northern Kentucky offices of Frost Brown Todd, has been re-appointed to the Kentucky Economic Development Partnership Board. He will serve another four-year term. Robinson maintains a civil litigation practice with a focus on commercial, product liability, environmental and medical malpractice cases.

Kingsport lawyer Meredith B. Humbert has been named a partner of Hunter, Smith and Davis. Humbert joined the firm in 2007 and focuses her practice on medical malpractice defense, health care law and personal injury actions. She also serves in the TBA House of Delegates.

The Nashville Young Leaders Council recently announced the Spring 2015 graduates of its nonprofit board training program. After completing more than 30 hours of leadership training, these individuals will now serve one-year internships on local boards. TBA members among the group are Robert Chapski with Lewis Thomason, Michael Harmon with Waller, Raquel Parker with Baker Donelson, Mary Lauren Teague with Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs and Emily Warth with Walker Tipps & Malone.

Bass, Berry & Sims has elected Ryan R. Baker and Kinika L. Young to membership in the firm. Baker, who works in the Memphis office, represents clients in the financial services industry. Young, who works in the Nashville office, represents health care providers and hospital systems and handles business disputes and product liability claims.

Mark P. Chalos has been named managing partner of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein’s Nashville office. A member of the firm for over a decade, Chalos represents clients in personal injury, medical device, product liability and other tort actions. He replaces Kathryn Barnett, who recently was named managing partner of Morgan & Morgan’s Nashville office.

Chambliss, Bahner & Stophel lawyer Tom Greenholtz has been named a fellow of the American Bar Foundation. Greenholtz focuses his practice on commercial and business disputes, municipal law and civil and criminal litigation.

Harry R. Cash, an attorney with the Chattanooga law firm of Grant, Konvalinka & Harrison, recently received the 2014 Chapter Appreciation Award from the Chattanooga Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.

The Napier-Looby Bar Foundation celebrated its 11th Annual Barristers’ Banquet and Awards Program in Nashville recently. Foundation President William Stover presented a number of awards. TBA members among those honored were Nashville lawyer Luther Wright, who received the Justice A. A. Birch Outstanding Service Award, and newly elected Judge Kelvin Jones, who received the J.C. Napier Trailblazer Award. New Fellows also were introduced at the event. TBA members among the group were Charles Bone with Bone McAllester Norton, Gordon Bonnyman with the Tennessee Justice Center and Dewey Branstetter with Sherrard & Roe.

Amanda E. Kelley has joined the Chattanooga office of Carr Allison as a shareholder. Kelley focuses her practice on civil litigation defense, including premises and products liability, first party property coverage and health care.

The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands (LAS) recently announced that DarKenya Waller, managing attorney of the Nashville office, has been elected chair of the board for the Nashville Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Waller has been a visible advocate for domestic violence victims in the community since moving to Nashville in 2008. As board chair, she will execute the group’s mission of raising awareness, strengthening services and addressing systemic problems.

In addition, LAS Executive Director Gary Housepian has been selected for the second annual Where Health Meets Justice Fellowship, hosted by the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnership at George Washington University and the National Legal Aid and Defender Association. Housepian is a member of the TBA’s Access to Justice Committee and is currently serving on the TBA’s Medical-Legal Partnership Working Group.

The Tennessee Higher Education Commission unanimously elected lawyer and commission member Evan Cope as its new chair. Cope will lead the 15-member group, which coordinates the state’s higher education governing bodies. He works with Cope, Hudson, Reed & McCreary in Murfreesboro.

FordHarrison has added Allison Malone Cotton as an associate in its Nashville office. Cotton previously worked at Manier & Herod. She will continue to focus her practice on labor and employment matters.

he firm also announced the addition of Nicole Bermel Dunlap as counsel in its Tampa office. Dunlap most recently worked at Littler Mendelson in Memphis. She will continue to practice in the field of labor and employment law.

Alicia Cottrell has joined the legal department of Tenet Healthcare as associate counsel. In her new role she will advise the company’s hospitals on a range of operational issues. Cottrell most recently practiced with Butler Snow in Nashville.

Nashville Emerging Leaders recently announced the members of its 2015 leadership class. TBA members among the group are Joshua Burgener with Dickinson Wright, Hunter Kitchens with Waller and Kyonzte Hughes-Toombs with the Tennessee Department of Health.

Keith McCarthy has joined the Clarksville law firm of Batson Nolan as an associate. He previously was an assistant attorney general for the state of Ohio. He also is JAG officer in the U.S. Army.

Waller has hired Nashville real estate attorney J. Bryan Echols as a partner. Echols previously worked in the Nashville offices of Dickinson Wright and Stites & Harbison.

Real estate default services law firm Wilson & Associates, which has two offices in Arkansas and three in Tennessee, has named three new shareholders. They are: Randy Bueter, Shellie Wallace and Aaron Squyres. They all practice in the firm’s Little Rock office.

Kramer Rayson partner Robert L. Bowman is now a Tennessee Supreme Court approved Rule 31 Listed General Civil Mediator. Bowman is a member of the firm’s Employment Law Practice Group and serves on its management committee.

Matthew R. Macaw has joined the Memphis law firm of McDonald Kuhn as an associate. Macaw is a 2010 graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Law. He previously worked at Divorce Incorporated.

The Chattanooga Bar Association presented six awards at its annual meeting. Joseph C. Simpson with Husch Blackwell received the Ralph K. Kelley Humanitarian Award; Marcia J. Eason with Miller & Martin received the President’s Award; Hamilton County General Sessions Judge Clarence Shattuck received the Jac Chambliss Lifetime Achievement Award; Charles W. “Buzz” Dooley with Leitner, Williams, Dooley & Napolitan received the Albert L. Hodge Volunteer of the Year Award; Richard A. Schulman with Patrick, Beard, Schulman & Jacoway received the Harry Weill Zealous Practice of Law Award; and Brittany Thomas with Grant, Konvalinka & Harrison received the Young Lawyer Division Volunteer of the Year Award.

The Memphis litigation firm of Glassman, Wyatt, Tuttle & Cox has elected Ed Wallis as a partner. Wallis focuses his practice in the areas of business, construction and probate and trust litigation as well as professional malpractice.

The firm also announced that senior shareholder Richard Glassman has been named a fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America.

Andrew “Drew” Taylor has been elected the new president of the Carter County Bar Association. He maintains a general practice in Elizabethton, with a focus on education, family and juvenile law.

Nashville patent attorney Jerry Turner Sewell has joined Patterson Intellectual Property Law where he will focus on electrical, electronic, software, Internet and data processing patents. Sewell previously was a partner at California-based Knobbe, Martens, Olson & Bear and a lawyer with Deutsch, Kerrigan & Stiles in New Orleans. Most recently he has been in solo practice in Franklin and Newport Beach, California.

John E. Nicoll of Manchester is the new 14th Judicial District Public Defender. A 1999 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law, Nicoll served in the U.S. Army JAG Corps prior to establishing a private law practice. He was appointed to the post by Gov. Bill Haslam.

The Murfreesboro law firm of PARKERSON | SANTEL recently announced that Travis M. Lampley has joined the firm. A former prosecutor, Lampley will handle criminal defense as well as family law, estate planning and civil litigation cases. He also is licensed as a Rule 31 General Civil Mediator.

Edward D. Lanquist Jr., managing shareholder in the law firm of Patterson Intellectual Property Law, recently took office as president of the Nashville Bar Association. New officers also were named. TBA members among them are: President-Elect Joycelyn Stevenson, Littler Mendelson; First Vice President Dewey Branstetter, Sherrard & Roe; First Vice President-Elect Matt Potempa, Martin Heller Potempa & Sheppard; Second Vice President John C. The Crossville City Council has appointed Ivy Gardner as the new city judge. Gardner, who set up her own law practice in 2013 after graduating as part of the first Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law class, plans to continue in private practice while serving as city judge.

The U.S. Air Force has promoted Air National Guard Brigadier General Robert L. Shannon Jr. to major general. Shannon is now serving in the Pentagon as special assistant to the director of the Air National Guard and as advisor to the Air Force deputy chief of staff for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance. Shannon also is a partner at the Atlanta law firm of Hall Booth Smith.

Butler Snow recently acquired the Nashville-based litigation firm of Walker Tipps & Malone. Thirteen of the firm attorneys made the move to Butler Snow’s Nashville office. They are: Jason W. Callen, Beau C. Creson, John C. Hayworth, Frank W. Hunger, M. Ryder Lee, Charles I. Malone, Gayle I. Malone Jr., Lauren Patten, Erin Palmer Polly, D. Gil Schuette, J. Mark Tipps, Robert J. Walker and Joseph F. Welborn III.

Stites & Harbison has named longtime partner Gregory D. Smith as executive member of its Nashville office. Smith, who has been with the firm since 1998, will oversee the office and assist the firm’s chair in executing strategic plans and policies. He also will continue to serve clients as a member of the family law group.

Cordell & Cordell, a St. Louis-based firm focused on representing men in family law cases, has opened an office in Murfreesboro. The office, the firm’s fourth in the state, is at 352 West Northfield Blvd., Suite 4C, Murfreesboro 37129. Other Tennessee offices include locations in Franklin, Memphis and Nashville.

Steve Shields was honored with the Eighth Annual Grayfred Gray Public Service in Mediation Award from the Tennessee Coalition for Mediation Awareness. Shields is partner with the Memphis firm of Jackson, Shields, Yeiser & Holt, director of the mediation clinic at the University of Memphis School of Law, and a member of the Tennessee Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission’s Mediation Committee. He is a past chair of the TBA and Memphis Bar ADR Sections and one of the original organizers of the Mediator-of-the-Day Program in the Memphis.
