Elephants in Tennessee: A First-Hand Account of the Fight for Nosey’s Freedom and Legal Issues Relating to Animals in Captivity
Mon, December 7, 2020
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM CT
Join the TBA Animal Law Section to learn about the legal battle to free Nosey — an elephant rescued from a traveling circus after decades of abuse before finding a new home at The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee. The panelists are lawyers who fought on the front line for Nosey’s placement in and right to remain in sanctuary, who will tell the story of the legal fight to save her and discuss the legal and ethical issues relating to elephants and other wild animals in captivity, and how to protect them.
Panelists include Lawrence County, Alabama, Assistant District Attorney Callie Waldrep, Professor Delci Winders of Lewis & Clark Law School, and Rachel Mathews of the PETA Foundation. Daina Bray, current chair of the TBA Animal Law Section and General Counsel of Mercy For Animals, will moderate. An optional Q&A session will follow the program.
This event is free and open to everyone. One hour of TN CLE credit is available upon request at a fee of $45 for TBA members.
