The TBA’s next book club discussion event will take place on Jan. 24, 2024, with Preston Lauterbach, author of “Beale Street Dynasty: Sex, Song and the Struggle for the Soul of Memphis.” The event will take place virtually on Zoom. Register to attend. The book, selected by TBA President Jim Barry, centers on an ex-slave who becomes the south’s first Black millionaire in Prohibition-era Memphis. Lauterbach brings history and the realities of race relations to life in his works, which also include “The Chitlin’ Circuit” and “Bluff City.” He also has co-authored three memoirs on significant figures in Black music: American blues musician and song writer Robert Johnson; Memphis soul drummer Howard Grimes; and a soon-to-be released biography of the Blind Boys of Alabama.

The American Bar Association (ABA) Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) will hold a free webinar tomorrow from noon to 1 p.m. CST on the topic of “Conservatorships and Guardianships in Medicine and Law.” Organizers say the purpose of the event is to promote literacy among lawyers on issues that intersect with medicine and law. Topics include working with clients with diminished capacity, discharging patients without capacity, and emergency or expedited processes to obtain consent to discharge. Presenters include Amy Willoughby Bryant, a TBA Board of Governors member and co-founder of the Conservatorship Association of Tennessee. Davidson County Fourth Circuit Court Judge Stan Kweller has announced that he is running for a full term. Kweller, who has more than 40 years of experience in the legal profession, was appointed to fill a vacancy on the court in January 2023 following the death of Judge Phil Smith. The special election to fill the seat will coincide with the presidential primary election on March 5, 2024. Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti recently filed what his office says is the “first-of-its-kind consumer protection lawsuit” against asset manager BlackRock Inc. The complaint alleges that Blackrock made false or misleading representations to current and potential consumers about the extent to which Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) considerations affected its investment strategies. Skrmetti said, “BlackRock’s inconsistent statements about its investment strategies deprived consumers of the ability to make an informed choice.” The enforcement action seeks injunctive relief, civil penalties and recoupment of the state’s costs. Ashley McKenzie Smith — the mother of Jaylin McKenzie — has filed a pro se complaint in federal court against the Memphis Police Department and the city of Memphis for the death of her son. According to the Commercial Appeal, Smith alleges her son was killed in December 2022 during a high-speed police pursuit that followed a failed attempt to pull over his vehicle. The Shelby County District Attorney's Office announced this past fall it would not charge the police officer involved in the shooting, but would provide refresher training.

The Community Legal Center (CLC) will hold its Pro Se Parent's Clinic tomorrow and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon and on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. CST. The clinic assists non-custodial parents obtain visitation rights and those seeking uncontested divorces with minor children. For more information visit the CLC online or email tinap@clcmemphis.org. On Thursday, Memphis Area Legal Services will hold its Courthouse Legal Advice Clinic from 1-3 p.m. CST at the Shelby County Courthouse. This clinic helps pro se litigants with an active or post judgment case in General Sessions Court. Attorneys willing to help can volunteer online.

Legal Aid of East Tennessee is seeking furniture donations for an upcoming office expansion. The agency is expanding to a second location in Knoxville to focus on housing stability and eviction prevention. It is requesting donations of unwanted desks, chairs, cabinets and other furniture. Those who have items to donate should contact Zachary Arnold, 865-251-4955.

The flag-draped casket of retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor arrived at the Supreme Court building today for a private ceremony with the current justices and O’Connor’s family, Reuters reports. The body of the nation’s first female justice will lay in repose until 8 p.m. EST today so members of the public can pay their respects. A private funeral service will be held tomorrow at the National Cathedral. O'Connor died Dec. 1 at age 93. See photos from this morning's activities from Reuters.
