The judiciary is tightening financial disclosure rules for U.S. Supreme Court justices and other judges covering certain trips, meals and other personal hospitality. In changes disclosed this week, the Judicial Conference clarified regulations around financial reporting exemptions. Under the new standard, justices must disclose travel to a resort or other commercial property paid for by a business or certain third parties. The new standard took effect March 14. Bloomberg Law has more on the change.

The U.S. Justice Department is seeking to go on a “hiring spree” for immigration judges next year, Knoxville Times reports. In its budget proposal for fiscal year 2024, which starts Oct. 1, the department is seeking $1.46 billion for the office tasked with adjudicating immigration claims. The request represents an increase of nearly 70% in funding and would enable the agency to hire 965 new judicial staff, including 150 new immigration judges. Attorney General Merrick Garland said in written testimony before a Senate appropriations subcommittee that the effort is designed to address the backlog of cases. There are currently about 600 immigration judges in the country (more than double from just a few years ago) handling more than two million cases.

The Tennessean takes a look into politics, with updates on legislation that would lower open gun carry age limits from 21 to 18; a Senate panel’s rejection of a bill that would require adult cabaret performers to obtain work permits; the outlook for a measure that would block insurance companies from contracting with TennCare if they cover gender transition care; and Senate support for making Juneteenth an official state holiday. A number of bills also are likely dead for the year. The Jackson Sun reports on the fate of a bill that would have moved foreclosure advertisements from newspapers to a state-owned website. WPLN reports on the effort to eliminate the state Commission on Children and Youth. And WKRN looks at a bill that would have authorized the legislature to nullify any “unconstitutional federal action."

Leaders of the Tennessee State Conference of the NAACP issued a public demand for the release of five Black children taken from their parents after a misdemeanor traffic stop last month. The organization, joined by its local, youth and college chapters, also called for an investigation into all departments involved in removal of the children, Tennessee Lookout reports. Bianca Clayborne and Deonte Williams were traveling from Georgia to Chicago when they were pulled over in Coffee County for tinted windows and driving in the left-hand lane without passing. During a search of the car, police found five grams of marijuana. Williams was arrested while Clayborne was given a citation and told she could leave. Later, as Clayborne waited to post bond for Williams, DCS took the children from her saying they were “dependent and neglected.” It later amended its court petition to say the children were abused.

About a dozen Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) personnel were seen going in and out of Davidson County District Attorney Glenn Funk's offices in downtown Nashville last week as part of an ongoing criminal investigation, News Channel 5 reports. Technicians were seen using a device that, according to the manufacturer, is "designed to detect illicit eavesdropping signals." A TBI spokesperson confirmed the agents were at the office "working in an official capacity" but declined to speak about the "nature or scope of efforts." Funk released a statement saying his office "extended an invitation to the TBI and the Attorney General’s Office several weeks ago to come inspect our office security system. We are pleased they are finally here and we expect their investigation will find nothing inappropriate, much less illegal."
