A staffer who assisted in financial payments from the House Democratic Caucus has resigned after being accused of writing an unknown number of checks to himself and cashing them, WSMV reports. New House Minority Leader Karen Camper confirmed that her longtime staffer, Derrick Tibbs, resigned yesterday, after Caucus Chair Mike Stewart alerted Camper to questionable checks that had been written. Stewart said once the internal investigation is complete, and if Tibbs is found to have committed a crime, he should be charged.

Farm owners have hired legal representation and are preparing for a fight after a federal judge signed an order giving the Tennessee Valley Authority access to several farms along the route to a planned $300 million power center in Meigs County, The Chattanoogan reports. Judge Sandy Mattice's order says the farm lands "are deemed to be condemned and taken for the use of the United States" with compensation to be determined for the owners. The farm owners say they have only had a few months notice of the taking, but that TVA has been planning it for several years.

The Association for Women Attorneys (AWA) will present the Marion Griffin-Frances Loring Award to Jocelyn Dan Wurzburg, Memphis’ first professional mediator, at its annual banquet on Jan. 29. The event, which will be held at 409 S. Main Street in Memphis, will also include the passing of the AWA presidential gavel to Laura Deakins of Lewis Thomason. Several scholarships will also be awarded to students from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. Tickets are available from event co-chair Megan Warden, 901-821-0044.

The Tennessee Supreme Court today ordered the law license of Michael Donald Treacy transferred to disability inactive status pursuant to Section 27.3 of Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 9. Treacy cannot practice law while on disability inactive status. He may return to the practice of law after reinstatement by the Tennessee Supreme Court upon showing of clear and convincing evidence that the disability has been removed and he is fit to resume the practice of law.

The Supreme Court of Tennessee today disbarred Aschalew Guadie Nigussie of Decatur, Georgia, from the practice of law in Tennessee and ordered him to pay restitution to one client as a condition of reinstatement. A petition for discipline consisting of two complaints of misconduct against Nigussie was filed August 14, 2017. The complaints allege Nigussie accepted fees from clients, performed little if any work on their behalf and abandoned the cases when he ceased communicating with them. Nigussie did not respond to the petition for discipline and an order for default judgment was entered against him.

The wife of a former Knoxville-area high school football coach is claiming that the 14-year-old boy she engaged in a sexual relationship with was a “willing participant,” and therefore the lawsuit filed against her and her husband should be tossed out, Knoxnews reports. Kelsey McCarter’s attorney claims that because the South-Doyle High football player derived a “personal benefit” from the incidents he was not sexually abused, and therefore isn’t entitled to try to collect damages.

Sen. Jack Johnson, R-Franklin, was elected to serve as the next majority leader for Tennessee Senate Republicans, The Tennessean reports. Johnson, who was first elected to the Senate in 2006, beat Sen. Mike Bell, R-Riceville, to earn title as the upper chamber's No. 2 leader. Johnson replaces former senator Mark Norris, who left office to take a federal judgeship.

Settlements have been reached in two lawsuits against the Hamilton County Department of Education brought in connection with the rape of several Ooltewah High School freshmen basketball players, The Chattanoogan reports. One of the boys was seriously injured when a pool cue was inserted into his rectum by older players at a cabin in Gatlinburg. The case was set to go to trial on Dec. 11. Terms of the settlements have not been made public.

The former Rutherford County Judicial Building could soon be home to a Murfreesboro City Court and a police precinct, The Daily News Journal reports. Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland said that the current City Hall is out of space, and the old county judicial building could help alleviate the problem. County officials are also exploring new uses for the building, which is located on the city square and was replaced by the new Judicial Center earlier this year.

John Barzizza, a Germantown alderman who ran for mayor, has a filed a complaint asking for a recount of the results of the Nov. 6 election, The Commercial Appeal reports. The complaint was filed against the Shelby County Election Commission and administrator Linda Phillips, claiming that the election commission failed to distribute, allow, verify and tally absentee and provisional ballots properly. Barzizza challenged Mayor Mike Palazzolo for Germantown's highest seat and lost by 120 votes, according to the results certified by the election commission on Nov. 26.
