National law firm Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker has opened an office at Two American Center on West End Avenue in Nashville, The Nashville Post reports. The New York-based firm, which boasts nearly 800 attorneys in 37 offices, simultaneously announced an expansion to Birmingham. The firm’s Nashville presence will be led by Jeffrey Melcher, regional managing partner in Atlanta, and Stratton Horres, a regional managing partner based in Texas. The firm plans eventually to hire additional attorneys based in the new office.

Law school deans from across the state recently gathered in Nashville for the Tennessee Board of Law Examiners’ 2018 Deans’ Summit. The summit, which included deans from most of Tennessee's law schools, featured presentations and discussions on a range of topics, from law student wellness, to innovations at Tennessee law schools, to the state’s recent adoption of the Uniform Bar Exam. Other parts of the program took the form of an open discussion between members of the board and the deans.

Columbia lawyer Jerry Carothers Colley died Nov. 23. He was 91. Colley obtained his law degree from Vanderbilt in 1951. He practiced law for 65 years, serving on the Tennessee Supreme Court Board of Professional Board of Responsibility, and was a member of his local bar associations, as well as the American College of Trial Lawyers. A funeral service will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church. The family suggests memorials to First United Methodist Church, 222 West Seventh Street, Columbia, Tennessee, 38401.

District Attorney General Garry G. Brown of the 28th District was recently recognized as the recipient of this year's McCutchen Award, which honors efforts made in the quest for justice, The Jackson Sun reports. The McCutchen Award, established 17 years ago in memory of Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference Director Pat McCutchen, is given each year to a prosecutor for efforts to improve the quality of justice for all Tennesseans, and advances the Conference as Tennessee’s definitive voice for criminal justice. The honor comes just three months after Attorney General Brown reopened the 1940 cold case homicide of civil rights activist Elbert Williams in Haywood County. Williams, recognized as the first known NAACP member to be killed for his civil rights work, was a participant in the Brownsville NAACP branch’s 1940 effort to register African-American voters.

Tennessee House Democrats have chosen Rep. Karen Camper for Minority Leader, making her the first African-American to hold the position, The Tennessean reports. The Memphis legislator replaces former leader Craig Fitzhugh, who chose not to run for reelection this year in order to run for governor. Camper, a retired U.S. Army chief warrant officer, was first elected to the legislature in 2008. Rep. Mike Stewart, D-Nashville, will continue in his position as Democratic Caucus chairman.

Newly-elected U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn is a favorite to join the Senate Judiciary Committee, Politico reports. Senate Republicans are eager to address their gender diversity issues, the report says, and adding Blackburn would help that process. According to Chair Chuck Grassley, it has been difficult in previous years to convince women to join the committee.

Gov. Bill Haslam last week set a special election to select a successor to state Sen. Mark Norris, who resigned upon being confirmed as a federal judge in West Tennessee, The Nashville Post reports. The special primary election for state Senate District 32 will be held Jan. 24, with early voting starting Jan. 4. The special general election will follow on March. 12, with early voting beginning Feb. 20. The district includes Tipton County and part of Shelby County.

David Earl Miller, the next Tennessee death row inmate scheduled to be executed this year, has informed prison officials he wants to be executed using the electric chair, The Tennessean reports. Miller's execution is set to move forward as scheduled Dec. 6. Miller was sentenced to death for the 1981 murder of Lee Standifer in Knoxville. He is the second death row inmate this year to opt for electrocution. Inmate Edmund Zagorski chose to die by electrocution on Nov. 1 because he believed it would be a faster death compared to lethal injection. Miller did not give any reasoning for his decision.
