A federal judge today barred the Trump administration from refusing asylum to immigrants who cross the southern border illegally, Fox News reports. Trump issued a proclamation on Nov. 9 that said anyone who crossed the southern border would be ineligible for asylum. U.S. District Judge Jon S. Tigar issued a temporary restraining order after a request was made by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Constitutional Rights.

State House Republicans today selected longtime Franklin lawmaker Glen Casada to be their nominee for the chamber's next speaker, The Tennessean reports. Casada was chosen over Reps. Curtis Johnson, R-Clarksville, and David Hawk, R-Greeneville. His election comes eight years after he lost his bid for speaker to Beth Harwell, who resigned from her seat to run for governor this year. A tea party favorite, Casada was viewed as the most conservative choice for the position.

Vanderbilt Law School has been named by the Princeton Review as one of the Top 10 best law schools for women for 2019, Above the Law reports. Vandy came in at number eight on a list that was topped by Vermont Law and Stanford Law. The ranking is determined by the percentage of the student body who identify as women as well as on student answers to a single survey question: whether all students are afforded equal treatment by students and faculty regardless of their gender.

The deadline to apply for the TBA's Diversity Leadership Institute (DLI) has been extended to Nov. 30, giving law students extra time over the holidays and next week to complete and submit their bids to join the 2019 class. Now in its ninth year, the DLI is designed to develop skills to succeed as an attorney, empower students to contribute to the legal community, match students to mentors in a variety of practice areas and build relationships among students of diverse backgrounds. Interested applicants must be enrolled in a Tennessee law school and must be in their second, third or fourth year of study. To be accepted into the program, students must be TBA law student members.

Two attorneys have been reinstated to practice in Tennessee recently after being placed on inactive status more than five years ago. Juliane D. Morris of Jackson, Mississippi, was reinstated on Friday after being on inactive status since June 19, 2012, and Mason S. Montgomery of Oxford, Mississippi, was reinstated today after being on inactive status since May 7, 2012.

A new report from the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury shows that the state’s counties and municipalities have approximately $3.7 million in cash shortages, Knoxnews reports. Some of the shortages are due to misuse of public funds and fraud, such as an Oneida Special School District employee purchasing more than $60,000 worth of items for personal use or a former Knox County Schools mechanic who used school purchasing cards to buy nearly $187,000 in auto parts for his car repair business.

A report released today by the Policing Project shows that a Metro Nashville Police Department strategy of emphasizing traffic stops in an effort to reduce violence has failed, The Tennessean reports. The study shows Nashville police conducting more than twice the traffic stops of comparable cities, and yet the crime rate has remained flat since 2012. It found that black drivers were stopped at a 44 percent higher rate than white drivers, with the percentage even higher when only looking at non-moving violation stops, such as broken tail lights or expired tags.

Nissan Motor Co. Chairman Carlos Ghosn has been dismissed from the company after an internal investigation found he under-reported his income by millions and engaged in other “significant misconduct,” The Associated Press reports. He voluntarily submitted to questioning last week by Tokyo prosecutors. Nissan calls Nashville home in North America, and its Smyrna-based plant is one of the largest employers in the greater Nashville area.

After renegotiating Shelby County’s contract with phone service provider GTL, County Mayor Lee Harris and Commissioner Tami Sawyer announced today that the county will stop charging detained juveniles awaiting trial for calls to their parents or guardians, The Commercial Appeal reports. Calls were costing juveniles $3 a piece, making it difficult for them to reach their families.
