Vanderbilt Law School recently hired a new assistant clinical professor of law who’s working to help people understand their First Amendment rights. Funded through a grant from The Stanton Foundation, Professor Gautam Hans is leading the launch of the First Amendment clinic, which aims to give students the opportunity to develop legal strategies and learn how to overcome challenges with diverse clients and cases. The program will launch this semester.

The Knoxville Bar Association will hold its annual memorial service on Nov. 16 at 3 p.m. at the Tennessee Supreme Court Courtroom, 505 Main St., 2nd Floor. The service will celebrate the life and careers of 15 attorneys who passed away this year: E. Riley Anderson, Richard Ralph Baumgartner, Janice Leyton Claytor, David Dickason Creekmore, Paul Edward Dunn, Thomas Draper Kerr, John D. Lockridge, William Eugene McClamroch III, A.C. Myers, Michael Anthony Nolan, Philip James Pfeifer, Spenser Flinn Powell, Jonathan Rohr, Hon. Richard R. Vance and Edward Eugene Wilson.

An immigration board has rejected an appeal from detained Spanish-language reporter Manuel Duran, bringing him closer to deportation back to his native El Salvador, The Commercial Appeal reports. Duran was arrested during a Memphis protest earlier this year and has spent about seven months behind bars. The ruling came from the Board of Immigration Appeals in Falls Church, Virginia. Duran could face deportation by mid-November, but he is now fighting his case at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit.

Weeks after former company president Mark Hazelwood was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for his role in a fraud scheme, more convicted Pilot Flying J executives were sentenced yesterday, Knoxnews reports. Appearing in U.S. District Judge Curtis Collier’s courtroom, John “Stick” Freeman and Vicki Borden were sentenced to two-and-a-half years behind bars and Brian Mosher was sentenced to two years. Freeman and Mosher were ordered to pay a $100,000 fine and Borden a $75,000 fine.

Videos from Tennessee Supreme Court oral arguments held in October are now available online. This is the first time oral arguments have been video recorded and made available to the public. “There has been too much mystique about the Supreme Court for too long,” Chief Justice Jeff Bivins said. “This Supreme Court is committed to openness and transparency so the public can see and understand the process and decisions we make.” The video will give lawyers, students and others a more realistic feel of the interaction between the court and attorneys during oral argument, which often includes unscripted questioning and debate.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg fractured three ribs on her left side during a fall yesterday in her office, resulting in her hospitalization, CBS News reports. This is the second time Ginsburg has experienced such an injury, having broken ribs in a fall in 2012.

Brett Kavanaugh formally took his seat as the 114th justice at a U.S. Supreme Court investiture ceremony last week, NPR reports. President Trump and first lady Melania Trump attended the ceremony. Justice Anthony Kennedy, whose retirement created the vacancy for Kavanaugh's nomination, also attended.

Bass, Berry & Sims announced today that Erica Bell Vick will serve as chair of the firm’s government advocacy and public policy practice group, The Nashville Post reports. Vick succeeds Richard “Dick” Lodge, who will retire at year’s end. Vick will advocate for clients’ business interests before the Tennessee General Assembly and before various executive branch departments, agencies and commissions of state government.

The Girl Scouts of the United States of America filed suit against the Boy Scouts on Monday for trademark infringement for dropping the word "boy" from its flagship program in an effort to attract girls, NBC News reports. The Girls Scouts say it has already been damaged by the name change announcement, saying that "throughout the country, families, schools and communities have been told that GSUSA and BSA have merged, or even that GSUSA no longer exists." They charge that the name change will “marginalize the Girl Scouts Movement” by causing the public to believe their services are “not true or official ‘Scouting’ programs.”
