The University of Tennessee College of Law has targeted Nashville as a place for expanded outreach, hiring its first Nashville-based employer relations manager to help give students more opportunities to work and study in the city. Christie Laird has been brought on board to represent the college at local events and help students build relationships with working attorneys in the Middle Tennessee area. Third-year students this year will also have the chance to participate in the Nashville Semester in Residence program, in which they can complete a semester of study partnered with a Middle Tennessee-based employer.

U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and the woman who accused him of attempting to rape her when they were both high school students have been asked to testify at a hearing next Monday, The Hill reports. The hearing will give lawmakers a chance to “give these recent allegations a full airing,” said Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa. Christine Blasey Ford, Kavanaugh’s accuser, has not yet confirmed she will testify.

A new lawsuit has been filed in the ongoing dispute between attorney Dale Buchanan and his son, Michael Buchanan, over the operation of their firm, The Chattanoogan reports. The filing claims Michael Buchanan hired his wife, a non-lawyer, as chief executive officer, as well as hired several other family members and in-laws. The firm allegedly provided his wife a luxury car and hundreds of thousands of dollars for doing little work, as well as paid for vacations for her and her family. Dale Buchanan first sued his son in 2015, saying that Michael Buchanan was using the firm for personal affairs. That suit was settled in 2016.

The woman who accused U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault has come forward with her allegations, Fox News reports. The woman, a California professor named Christine Blasey Ford, detailed her claim that Kavanaugh attempted to rape her when they were both high school students. Senate Judiciary Committee member Jeff Flake, R-Arizona, said he was “uncomfortable moving forward with a ‘yes’ vote until we hear from” Ford. Kavanaugh has denied the accusations. The Tennessean reports that Sen. Bob Corker joined Flake in calling for a delay on Kavanaugh's confirmation vote.

Attorneys for the plaintiff in the Brentwood Academy sexual assault case are accusing the presiding judge of plagiarism, The Tennessean reports. They claim Williamson County Judge Deanna Johnson “plagiarized findings of fact and conclusions of law by defense counsel” in her proposed order. Johnson’s order remains under seal. She dismissed the case without prejudice in June, after the Tennessee Court of Appeals overturned her earlier decision to dismiss the case with prejudice.

The federal government has until Nov. 13 to respond to Alabama's lawsuit seeking to exclude immigrants living in the country illegally from U.S. Census counts, The Associated Press reports. A federal judge granted the extension after lawyers said the Department of Justice components needed additional time to finish "evaluating the arguments that the government will make in this matter." Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall filed the lawsuit against the federal government in June. Marshall argues the immigrants should not be included in census counts used to distribute congressional district.

Attorney General Herbert Slatery III today joined 55 other state and territory attorneys general to urge Congress to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). The attorneys general sent a letter earlier today to congressional leaders and the chairs of the Senate and House Judiciary Committees, urging lawmakers to vote to reauthorize VAWA before it expires this year. Under VAWA, originally passed in 1994, over $6 billion in grant funding has been awarded to government and nonprofit organizations nationwide. The grants have funded training and assistance to address and reduce domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking.

The annual Creditors Practice Forum will be held at the Tennessee Bar Center on Sept. 26. This year's program will provide new information on stay violations, charging orders and theories of successor liability. Other topics include a discussion of bankruptcy focusing on preference issues and dischargeability and an ethics session about the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
