A Sevier County man who took his father-in-law’s Social Security benefits for six years after leaving the man’s body on the side of a road was sentenced to nearly twice the recommended sentencing guidelines for his crimes, Knoxnews reports. Senior U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Phillips called the actions of Ricky James Bennefield “disturbing and beyond imagination.” Bennefield pleaded guilty to the crime, and admitted to dumping the body of his father-in-law in a makeshift grave during a family trip to Florida in 2010. The man’s body has never been recovered.

Fifteenth Judicial District Public Defender Comer Donnell is retiring on Nov. 1. To fill the vacancy, the state is seeking applicants to serve until the next election in 2020. Applicants must have an active Tennessee law license, have lived in the state for five years and have lived in the district for one year. Cara Suvall has joined the faculty at Vanderbilt Law, where she will launch a new legal clinic to provide civil legal representation to teens and young adults at risk for criminal involvement in areas of education, housing and employment. The Youth Opportunity Clinic will open in spring 2019. “The Youth Opportunity Clinic will address an important gap in legal services for youth between the ages of 16 to 25, and I’m extremely pleased that Cara Suvall is joining our faculty to launch and direct this clinic,” Dean Guthrie said.

Phil Noblett has been confirmed as city attorney and chief legal officer for the city of Chattanooga, the Hamilton County Herald reports. Noblett, who has been practicing in Tennessee since 1982, become deputy city attorney in 2009. Mayor Andy Berke said Noblett is “uniquely and eminently qualified” to serve in the position.

Claiborne County Sheriff David Ray has been arrested and charged with dodging taxes and illegally using jail inmates for labor, Knoxnews reports. The charges came nearly four months after state and federal authorities serving a search warrant raided the sheriff's offices in April. The indictments claim Ray used inmates to put together campaign signs and to work on personal vehicles he later sold for a profit.

The Tennessee Registry of Election Finance has dismissed complaints filed against Rep. Beth Harwell and Bill Lee’s gubernatorial campaigns, The Tennessee Journal reports. Both had been accused of illegal coordination with a political action committee.

Criminal Court Judge Mark Fishburn has ruled that the man accused of murdering four people in an Antioch Waffle House will be committed to a mental hospital for treatment until he is fit to stand trial, The Tennessean reports. Travis Reinking was deemed “in definite need of training and medical treatment” at a hearing held today. Previously, a forensic psychologist said he had severe schizophrenia. The court will check on Reinking’s status every six months, but Fishburn said he wanted to be “immediately notified” when he was ready for trial.

The annual Tax Law Forum will be held at the Tennessee Bar Center in Nashville on Sept. 17. Sessions will focus on the new Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Topics include the new pass-through entity tax law, an overview of the changes to international tax law, corporate and other business tax changes as well as non-profit law changes.

A California man has brought a class action lawsuit against Google for collecting location data even after users disabled their location tracking, ABA Journal reports. The filing alleges that the practice is in violation of California’s Invasion of Privacy Act and the state’s Constitutional Right to Privacy. The suit seeks to create two classes of plaintiffs – one for iPhone and one for Android users.
