Deana Hood has been appointed the city of Spring Hill’s new Municipal Court Judge starting Aug. 1, the Columbia Daily Herald reports. The Spring Hill Board of Mayor and Aldermen made the official selection on Monday. Hood won the vote by a narrow margin, defeating acting interim Municipal Court Judge Tom DuBois.

The father of accused Waffle House shooter Travis Reinking has filed a petition to dismiss a lawsuit brought against him by the family of one of the victims, NewsChannel5 reports. Jeffrey Reinking has issued a motion to dismiss the lawsuit from Christian Perez, the administrator for the estate of victim Joe Perez. Jeffrey Reinking is accused of negligence for returning firearms to his son that had previously been confiscated by law enforcement. His petition for dismissal argues that the plaintiff "cannot make allegations demonstrating that Jeffrey Reinking had a superior or exclusive right of control over Travis Reinking’s firearms.”

In an appeal from Shelby County Criminal Court, the Tennessee Supreme Court affirmed a trial court’s dismissal of a prisoner’s request for a new trial more than 20 years after his original conviction for aggravated rape. In 2016, prisoner Tommy Nunley filed a coram nobis petition, claiming there was new information to prove he was not guilty of the rape he was convicted of in 1998. The Supreme Court held that trial courts may summarily dismiss coram nobis petitions that do not show sufficient facts on their face, without discovery or an evidentiary hearing. Justice Holly Kirby authored the unanimous opinion.

A nationwide trend is emerging among doctors and hospitals, who are increasingly taking patients to court for posting negative comments and reviews on social media, USA Today reports. Recent cases include a Cleveland, Ohio-based physician, who is suing a former patient for defamation after she posted negative reviews about her nose job, an Arizona medical practice that successfully sued a singer who used her own website to criticize her doctors and a Michigan hospital that sued an elderly patient’s daughters and granddaughter over a Facebook post.

Following a lawsuit, the Army has reversed its decision to discharge a citizenship-seeking immigrant solider, The Washington Post reports. In a federal court filing, the Army acknowledged that its plan to discharge Lucas Calixto was “improper.” Calixto previously filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court challenging the move, claiming the Army violated its own policies by not explaining why he was discharged or given a chance to respond.

An American Bar Association staffer embezzled $1.3 million from the organization, according to a disclosure on the organization’s latest tax filing, Law.com reports. The ABA learned of the employee’s theft last year and immediately placed the individual on administrative leave, terminating their employment the following day. The series of thefts occurred over an eight-year period. The organization has since reassessed its accounting safeguards.

Shelby County has again asked the U.S. Department of Justice to be released from the requirements of a memorandum of agreement between the Juvenile Court, the county and the DOJ to reform the court, The Commercial Appeal reports. A June 6 monitor’s report, however, recommended continued oversight, citing concerns including psychiatric evaluations and the number of minors still transferred to adult court.

Tthe Supreme Court of Tennessee today temporarily suspended Candace Lenette Williamson of Southaven, Mississippi, from the practice of law upon finding that she failed to respond to the board regarding a complaint of misconduct. Section 12.3 of Supreme Court Rule 9 provides for the immediate summary suspension of an attorney’s license to practice law in cases of an attorney’s failure to respond to the board regarding a complaint of misconduct. Williamson is immediately precluded from accepting any new cases, and she must cease representing existing clients by Aug. 17.

Davidson County Chancellor Claudia Bonnyman has dismissed Tennessee Democrats' lawsuit against the Hamilton County Election Commission, which was filed when commissioners let Republican Robin Smith replace state Rep. Gerald McCormick, R-Chattanooga, on the primary ballot after the withdrawal deadline for the Aug. 2 election, the Times Free Press reports. State Democrats could still choose to appeal to the Tennessee Court of Appeals or file suit in Hamilton County Chancery Court. Early voting in the election has already begun.
