Metro Nashville’s legal department is facing scrutiny from the Metro Council over the actions of an attorney who deposed a mother of a teen girl who claimed she was sexually abused at school, The Tennessean reports. The girl and her mother are suing the city in federal court accusing negligence on the part of Metro Nashville Public Schools, and in the deposition of the girl’s mother, an attorney asked questions about the girl’s sexual history, birth control usage and menstrual cycle. “Our youth and their families deserve better treatment,” said Councilmember Angie Henderson.

Attorney General Herbert H. Slatery III, along with a bipartisan group of Attorneys General, sued Purdue Pharma today for its unlawful marketing and promotion of OxyContin and other drugs and its role in causing and prolonging the opioid epidemic in Tennessee. The state’s lawsuit, filed in Knox County Circuit Court, alleges Purdue violated the Tennessee Consumer Protection Act, violated its 2007 settlement with the state, and created a statewide public nuisance by interfering with the health of Tennesseans and the commercial marketplace.

The family of Joe Perez, one of the individuals killed in the deadly shooting at a Nashville Waffle House last month, has filed suit against the father of suspect Travis Reinking, The Tennessean reports. The suit was filed in Tazewell County, Illinois, against Jeffrey Reinking, and claims he is responsible for the attack because he gave his son several weapons, even though the state of Illinois had revoked the suspect’s authorization to own them. The suit seeks more than $50,000 in damages.

Cyber-security experts hired by Knox County to investigate a “denial of service” cyberattack on Election Day, May 1, found evidence linked to a computer in the Ukraine, CBS News reports. The experts added that “a suspiciously large number of foreign countries” accessed the county’s elections website as votes were being reported. County officials said no voting data was affected, but the site was down for an hour after the polls closed.

The Nashville School of Law will be hosting its 25th annual Recognition Dinner on June 8, beginning with a reception at 5:30 p.m. This year, NSL will be honoring two individuals for their contributions to the school: Charles R. Niewold, class of 1984, and David L. Hudson Jr., a longtime faculty member. “The contributions these two gentlemen have made to Nashville School of Law through their combined decades of service to the school and the legal community are remarkable,” Dean William C. Koch Jr. said. The event will be held at the Renaissance Hotel. Tickets are available at the NSL website.

Members of the TBA’s Leadership Law program packed food for the hungry during their May service project at OneGeneration Away in Franklin. Class members also heard from a “Diversity in Leadership” panel featuring Regina Lambert, TBA Executive Director Joycelyn Stevenson, Belmont Law Dean Alberto Gonzales, Charles Bone and Abbie DeBlasis. Later the group received Media Training from Sheridan PR.

Kingsport lawyer Jackson C. “Jack” Raulston died on May 8. He was 91. A U.S. Navy veteran, Raulston graduated Vanderbilt Law School in 1952 after serving during World War II. He started his practice in Kingsport shortly afterwards and continued until his retirement in 2006. In 1961, Raulston became the youngest trial judge in Tennessee when he was appointed Judge Chancellor of the new Law and Chancery Court of Sullivan County. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. CST on Wednesday at Rogers Funeral Home, 400 Laurel Ave, South Pittsburg. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday morning. In lieu of flowers, Raulston requested memorial contributions be made to Second Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga, the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California, the Human Rights Campaign, or the National AIDS Memorial Grove.

On May 11, the Supreme Court of Tennessee reinstated Davidson County lawyer James Daniel Marshall to the practice of law. Marshall had been suspended on March 22 for a period of two years with a minimum of 30 days to be served as an active suspension and the remainder on probation. He satisfied the conditions of his suspension, filed a petition for reinstatement to the practice of law, and the Board of Professional Responsibility found that the petition was satisfactory.

The Supreme Court of Tennessee today reinstated Hawkins County lawyer Daniel Graham Boyd to the practice of law. Boyd was suspended on Jan. 10 for a period of 120 days. He filed a petition for reinstatement to the practice of law, and the Board of Professional Responsibility found that the petition was satisfactory.
