Tennessee senators rejected almost half of the nominees Gov. Bill Haslam named to the newly revamped University of Tennessee Board of Trustees, WPLN reports. The Senate Education Committee turned down four of the nominees, including three who are currently serving on the board. Nashville attorney Brad Lampley and Franklin attorney Melvin Malone were among the rejected. Last week the state legislature voted to dissolve the current UT board and replace it with a smaller one chosen by the governor.

Nancy Corley, a partner at Corley Henard Lyle Langford PLC, was recently honored by Nashville CABLE with the group's 2018 Athena Award, The Tennessean reports. The Athena Award is given each year to a woman for their career success, service and encouragement of women. In addition to her legal work representing domestic violence victims, Corley volunteers with numerous organizations, including Salvus Center, A Step Ahead, Children are People, PATHS and the League of Women Voters.

Former state senator and gubernatorial candidate Mae Beavers is the subject of a new complaint claiming she illegally diverted funds from her statewide campaign into her bid for Wilson County mayor, The Tennessean reports. On March 30, Beavers donated $122,000 from her gubernatorial campaign to Patriot PAC, of which her husband serves as an officer. Two of the three expenditures that PAC made were related to Beavers, including one $7,800 contribution made to “Mae Beavers for Mayor.” Ann Calabria, a Wilson County Election Commissioner, filed a complaint yesterday over the contributions.

SmileDirectClub, a Nashville-based orthodontics startup, is suing Gizmodo Media Group and author Nick Douglas over a story that criticized their company, the Nashville Post reports. The company claims that the story is “filled with unsubstantiated false statements and innuendo.” The article described criticisms from the American Association of Orthodontists about the company’s product. Gizmodo Media Group is made up of the remnants of Gawker Media, which was successfully sued by Hulk Hogan until it folded in 2016.

Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery’s office today backed down from a legal battle with state prosecutors over who has the power to sue major pharmaceutical companies for lying about the addictive nature of prescription painkillers, Knoxnews reports. Fourteen state district attorneys general representing 47 counties in Tennessee filed suit last year against opiate makers and distributors. The group of DAs today also announced that they wouldn’t try to legally commit the state to their suit.

In State vs. Minor, the Tennessee Supreme Court clarified when a new legal ruling issued after a criminal trial should be applied to a case retroactively and what standards an appellate court should apply to decide whether the new rule affords a defendant relief. The court concluded the law had changed between the time of Minor’s trial and appeal, so the law at the time of his appeal controlled. The majority opinion was written by Justice Cornelia A. Clark, with a separate concurring opinion written by Justice Sharon G. Lee.

Jackson lawyer Mary Jo Middlebrooks has been chosen as the recipient of the 2018 Sue Shelton White Award, presented by The Jackson Sun and the Jackson Area Business and Professional Women. The honor, which was announced at the Sterling Awards on April 11, is given annually to an outstanding attorney in West Tennessee who is a community activist working to create or change legislation to improve the lives of women and children across the state.

The Nashville Bar Association will host its annual Law Day Luncheon at noon on May 4 at the Downtown Renaissance Hotel. This is the 60th year the event has been held, and the topic for 2018 will be “Separation of Powers: Framework for Freedom.” Former Nashville Mayor Bill Purcell will be the featured speaker, with Judge Frank Clement serving as master of ceremonies. Tickets are available on the NBA website.
