A lawyer from Nashville is raising eyebrows amid the investigation into Russian interference with the U.S. elections, The Tennessean reports. G. Kline Preston is the attorney credited for introducing his client Alexander Torshin, a Russian politician with close ties to President Vladimir Putin, to former National Rifle Association President David Keene. Torshin is under scrutiny for illegally channeling Russian money to the NRA in 2016. Preston also counts U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn as a client and “long time” family friend, and has donated money to her bid for U.S. Senate.

A Rockvale man was arrested by the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office yesterday after allegedly threatening to shoot a judge, the Daily News Journal reports. Troy Clinton Chaffin claimed he was carrying a gun when he entered the Judicial Building in Murfreesboro yesterday. According to a news release, when flagged by a metal detector, Chaffin told a deputy that the alarm was sounding due to a gun he had brought to kill a judge. No weapon was found on Chaffin.

Clerk of the Appellate Courts Jim Hivner will review the court’s new e-filing process at the upcoming Tort and Appellate Forum on March 29 in Nashville. Other speakers include Dean Bill Koch of Nashville School of Law, the Hon. Neil Thomas, the Hon. Kyle Hendrick and former Chief Justice Janice Holder. Sessions will feature updates in tort law, the process of claim evaluations and best practices for insurance coverage and bad faith.

Marking a first for the technology, an Uber self-driving car struck and killed a pedestrian in Arizona, USA Today reports. A woman was crossing the street at night on Sunday when the car hit her. At the time the car had a safety driver behind the wheel, there to take control if an error occurred. The case raises questions in the debate regarding the legality surrounding this technology. It is unclear whether the safety driver, Uber, or anyone might be charged in connection to the incident.

The U.S. Supreme Court today refused to block a redrawn Pennsylvania congressional map, The Washington Post reports. This is the second time the court has declined to get involved in the case, after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that the state's 2011 congressional map, drawn by Republican leaders, violated the free-and-equal-elections clause of the state’s constitution.

Bills in the legislature that would transfer judgeships between counties are moving forward, with some likely amendments, The Tennessean reports. House Majority Leader Glen Casada, R-Franklin, said a portion of a bill that would have transferred a judgeship from the 20th judicial district, which includes Davidson County, to the 21st, which includes Williamson, will likely be amended to remove that transfer. However, a provision to add another judge to Rutherford County and remove one from Shelby County would remain. The Tennessee Bar Association has voiced its opposition to the measure.

A federal judge today dismissed Tennessee’s lawsuit against the U.S. government over refugee resettlement, The Tennessean reports. The lawsuit, which was pushed by state lawmakers via a 2016 resolution, claimed that the federal government violated the 10th Amendment and was not complying with the Refugee Act of 1980. The state hoped to halt all refugee resettlement in Tennessee until all associated costs were paid by the federal government.

The deadline is approaching to submit applications for the 2018-2019 Young Lawyers Division board. All non-elected board positions are currently available. To be eligible one must be a TBA member, admitted to practice within the past five years and/or be younger than the age 36 on June 2018. Applicants must also be able and willing to attend all five YLD meetings for the bar year. Applications are to be submitted via the TBA website and are due by March 31.

The YWCA of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia have honored nine women with their 2018 “Tribute to Women” awards, and two attorneys made the list this year. The Herald Courier reports that Jimmie C. Miller, with Hunter, Smith and Davis LLP in Kingsport and Karen Turnage Boyd of the Branch House Family Justice Center were included this year. Miller was recognized for her trailblazing role as the first female managing partner of her firm, while Boyd was honored for advocating for domestic violence victims.

Prosecutors say they will not seek the death penalty against Sherra Wright and Billy Ray Turner, who last year were charged in connection to the killing of former NBA player Lorenzen Wright, The Commercial Appeal reports. Turner and Sherra Wright both pleaded not guilty to first degree murder last year. Lorenzen Wright was found dead in 2010, and the discovery of a gun believed used in the homicide resurrected the case.
